That's a shame. I tried a playthrough without a mage and it's like a completely different game, none of the most fun utility spells, and becoming a lich if you're dark side was ridiculous fun too.

Anti sci-fi fags didn't help either. The worst part is they removed forge town when less than 100 people complained about it. If they were smart they would've just changed the style a bit while still keeping the faction.
>>
>>345240256
>tfw

Q: WHY DID YOU PULL THE FORGE?

GF: Reason One: As much as I thought the actions of many fans showed a lack of vision and an inherent distrust for a company who have given them hundreds of hours of quality gameplay, I still didn't want to fight our fans. Reason Two: There wasn't enough pro-Forge activity.

Q: DO YOU THINK 50% OF THE HEROES FANS WERE AGAINST THE FORGE?

GF: No. Total, the number of emails we received asking to remove the Forge were less than 100. I doubt 3DO received much more. As a series, Heroes has sold over 750,000 copies world wide. I would be surprised if more than 5% of the audience would have 'boycotted' the product. However, I still felt 5% was too high.

Q: DOES SCIENCE FICTION BELONG IN HEROES?

GF: Yes. Science fiction is the foundation of the Might and Magic universe. It is the reason the Might and Magic universe exists. At its core, the Might and Magic is about advanced civilizations who have descend into barbarism. If you disagree, your reasoning is emotional, not logical. Many people forget the Inferno is not populated by demons. It's populated by aliens who look like demons. If I told you the origin of the Arch Angels I'm sure many of you would have a heart attack.

From RPG series I played MM1, 2 and VI - X.
I love VII for gameplay. Class system is near perfection. I prefer 3D environment so I was a bit dissapointed with X. I finished MM1 but with cheated characters. I couldn't give it a time and monsters are ridiculously strong early. I tried MM2 but dropped it at start. Are 4-5 worth getting into? I don't have much time to indulge into and I'm not a big fan of movement int original

>>
>>345252117
Yup, made by ruskies.
It has new content like new classes, maps and items.
>>
>>345251294
In my personal opinion it's more like
MM7<=MM6<MM8<MM9

MM7 was my first entry in the series so maybe that's why. 3 levels of classes and archmaster levels were a great improvement. It falls a bit when it comes to quests, but overall I prefer 7th over 6th.

MM9 felt underdeveloped. Class system was interesting although no flying and Armaggedon was a bit turnoff.

I wish more RPG were using flying like MM6-8. Maybe a bit overpowered but shit's fun.
>>
Can you play M&M games in any order?
>>
>>345252216
>a bit overpowered

It almost completely trivialises outdoor combat since it keeps you out of range of melee enemies and lets you dodge projectile attacks even on the enemy's turn with the up and down keys.

It was amazing. Being a powerful wizard actually felt like it meant something, wizards were invaluable to a serious party, not just that guy that throws fireballs. You got it late enough in the game that you still did a lot on foot and it cut down on travel time in a better way than fast travel mechanics ever do

Plus my old games where I rushed wizard on my mage, learnt flying and invis and looted the Titans Stronghold super early was incredibly fun and nerve wracking
>>
>>345252749
Depends on the game. You could probably get away with playing 6 before the earlier games.
>>
>>345252749
If you care for the connections between the games you even kinda have to play them out of order.

>>
>>345254024
How it was fucked?
>>
>>345257795
Gonna copy and paste someone else's argument because lazy and he's more articulate than I ever will be. Part 1/?
Both VI and VII were made by the people who never understood how their own system works. Don't ask me how that happens. Still, VI had at least a semblance of reason. For example, different mastery level requirements for different skill categories. Because something that makes your life a bit more convenient (identify at 7, for example) really should not cost as much as something that just allows you to slaughter everyone (magic at 12). In VII, however, it's all stupid tens. And it's getting even worse by the fact that whereas in VI you end the game around level 100, in VII it's more like 60. So you're gaining considerably less skillpoints and the utility is much more expensive. And, obviously, you don't even need to level it up - there's just way too many free alternatives. But in VI, you could, if you weren't too stingy with your points. In VII, it's just a bad idea.

Next, monster resistances. These were fucked up on such a harsh level in VII. In VI, they were not tied to the schools - they were just elements and magic schools provided access to one or more of those elements. That put some restraint on the broken stuff of the game, you couldn't just shrapmetal your way to the victory. Occasionally, you've even had to use some shitty spells you've got because it was the only thing that worked. In VII - fuck that, let's just make light & dark OP because nothing can resist them, while everything resists everything else too well.
>>
>>345258883
Next, out of grand master upgrades, only two really add some new options:
1. Mace with its paralyzation.
2. Bows with their extra damage.

Everything else doesn't mean shit. Adding your sword skill to your armor? Fuck yeah, enjoy your 0.5% bonus to evasion (an actual one). Versus physical only, of course. Leather skill gets added to resistances? Ok, maybe that's not 0.5%, maybe that's 2% of extra hit points - big whoop! Shield acts as a shield spell? Yeah, as if I don't have the means to cast it otherwise.

Restrictions also don't do that much. They make some classes (like rangers & druids) incredibly shitty, but I can't really say that they force you into some tough choices.

Next, we have more classes, but that doesn't mean anything. Monk is pretty much the same stuff as Knight, and Ranger & Thief also are crappier carbon copies (as they don't do as much damage as the first two). They play in the exactly the same fashion, just with the worse stats. Druid also got wrecked into oblivion, so yeah, muh class diversity.
>>
>>345259028
Finally, just the plain hit point issue. You see, in VI, the difference between all the non-knight classes was rather minimalistic. Paladins & Archers got 5 hp and 4 sp per level (eventually) and casters got 4 hp and 5 sp per level. In VII, they made the spread to be much more severe. Paladins are 6/3 and wizards are 3/6, for example. And that's stupid. Flavorful, but just stupid gameplay-wise. In M&M, there are no rows, there's no tanking, your party is always at the frontline, everyone is constantly under attack. And since the first death/knockout/redzone generally means global retreat, you can say that your squad is only as survivable as your weakest member is (he goes down first). Therefore, it's pointless to have 200 hp paladins if your mage is 100 hp - all that extra gets wasted. In VI, designer understood that so the spread was minimal. In VII, designer hadn't got a fucking clue about anything. Was that even the same one, I wonder?
>>
>have dead characters
>go to some shady warlock healer
>he revives them as zombies
Though an inconvenience, I really like small things like that. I also like how your characters could technically get old enough to die of old age or in the case VI and higher if they get to 100 years of age their stats are reduced to like 10% of their original. I love shit like this.

>tfw video games dont use real people dressed up anymore
>>
>>345259028
I see his points here, the grandmaster skills being disappointing for everything but mace, bow, most of the magic skill trees, staff/unarmed, alchemy, merchentile and plate armour was annoying. I really really wanted there to be rows in VII, it felt pointless having one guy be a complete tank who never died if everyone else died before him, he ends up just useless.

I do feel the spread is justified, if you could put your tank in front of your mage then my lich in leather armour casting spells should be no-where near as tanky as my gobin knight in plate.

Thanks bros. I'm gonna try and start with 4, will jump ahead to 6 if the game breaks me. I usually have no trouble moving backwards in series like these, once I'm hooked by the more recent game.
Any gameplay tips? I always have a mage in my party, and the thread makes me want to specialize him as a wizard.
Any ways I can irreversibly and unknowingly fuck up my game, other than character development? I mean, can I break the main quest and not know about it, Sierra-style?

Read the Manual
Make sure to get at least one gnome and dwarf for detecting enemies and secrets.
Get a class with water walking
>>
>>345264150
equip everyone with bows so that you can kite things from range
always have a mage who knows Water magic
always have either a cleric or a hybrid healer like a Paladin, the healing isnt necessary but the debuff removal definitely is

you cant break the main quest as far as i know
