I think most people who played it liked it. Like everyone I talked to played it for like 50+ hours, and I did as well.
People are mostly just mad it was so disappointing and lackluster. It felt like a sort of deviation, like Peace Walker, something to keep us until the next big MGS release is going out, not the game to send off the entire series. It was supposed to be the MGS to end all MGS games, the best of the best, it was supposed to make up for the years of declining quality, Kojimas magnum opus. Instead it was just a fart passing through the wind. A very depressing way to end a series that has been with many of us since we were children. To know the last MGS game we are ever gonna get is just an okay but nothing special title with a totally irrelevant plot is just heartbreaking.

Okay, when I say freedom of attacking the level, I mean I get to choose my path through. Uncharted doesn't do that. You have a very linear, start here end here level design. MGSV doesn't do that. You can enter a level from wherever you want.
Your description of stealth is not how I played the game. I had a lot of fun spending time watching soldiers, marking everyone, and then choosing a path that would allow me to infiltrate without being spotted. But you're free to play it the way that you mentioned too. That's why I like the gameplay.
