It's a pretty good investment since you can just reuse a ton of your parts when you want to upgrade instead of having to buy a new PC.

I'd say 800-900 dollars, not counting the monitor/TV/etcetera. This is assuming that "pretty recent" means early/mid 2016 games. Regardless though, you always want to get somewhat new components rather than those "hurr PS4 price but better specs!" theorycraft builds using ancient hardware.
