Back in the day (late 90s, early 00s) most "respectable" game devs always had either demos (limited game content) or trials (full game content with time restrictions) easily available, which were obtainable via game magazines, bonus discs, and early dialup internet.
You actually had the chance to see if a game was worth buying. And companies made an effort to put a decent product out.
Now tell me, anon, when was the last time you saw a demo or a trial? And no, a refund doesn't count as one.

I pirate a lot of games.
I find that most are one shot wonders I get extremely tired of playing after a short time. Sovereignty Crown of Kings is like the one exception to this.
It's pretty decent, although extremely early access.
So no, not gonna throw money at that shit until it comes out of EA, but pirating lets me see how it's coming along. And what factions are op/up so I can tell devs my opinion.
Like, the build I pirated? Elves are OP as shit as soon as they get archers. They are a guaranteed 50% damage on any unit that doesn't have +3 defense against ranged attacks. And a range of 4-6, depending on what faction you pick and what upgrade you choose, extra range or extra damage specifically.
Now, most units can only MOVE 3 spaces in a turn. This lets a tiny elf force destroy an attacking force before they can get in range, quite outright crippling twice their number in units before they can engage.
And to top it all off, ranged units also fire preemtively on units attacking adjacent units. Even if they're ranged attackers.
And do the full amount of damage.
It is borderline impossible to tackle a group of archers without units that have Phantom, and Phantoms are immune to ranged attacks.
But only evil factions have Phantom type units, and so humans get utterly buttfucked by massed archers.
If I'd bought this game I'd be mad as hell, but I didn't, and I can definitely say this game could be great, and if it becomes great, I'll totally buy it. But not before then.
