A lot of people are forgetting that thieves don't just break into houses at random. They usually plan these things out for at least a week and come in when they think they have the advantage, typically when the home owner is either away or old and has no one over to stop them from just kicking their ass and taking their shit. Not him, but most folks tend to keep their firearms close. Their defensive firearm is usually kept in drawer in their immediate vicinity, on their person, etc. Other firearms are kept locked up. Odds are the criminal won't "find it first" or he may already be armed.
The second point is a strawman argument. Though it is a good point it depends on how a child is raised. I grew up around firearms and was taught how dangerous they are, shown what they can do, and told never to touch them without permission and supervision.
A cousin I had who tried on more than one occasion got his ass beat for it each time. He learned quickly not to do it after a few.

Well here in Canada we cant have guns at home so that scenario is a no go.
In 28 years the only gun I saw in person was some hunting riffle to hunt dear up north and thats it.
