How do we fix horror henre?

>>345155734
less reliance on jumpscares and grossouts. More use of atmosphere, surrealism, and using the unknown and confusion to make the player afraid.

Oh, also helplessness.

I've long contemplated the idea of a game where you play as a badass parkour soldier and your guns do jackshit to them, enemies teleport and phase through walls.

You can't.

The internet has made the genre a complete joke and devs went where the money is.

Jumpscare twitchtube cancer makes way more than actual attempts at horror.

It will never, ever be good or relevant again.

As you can see the area aound them is flooded, in this situation it was the end of the world for them. This is why they decided to meet on this pole and fuck eachother senseless before the unavoidable doom gets them. One last orgy. So beautiful.

Punish the player to make it scarier. Running into the monster or the wrong room or whatever triggers something that will mean even more serious repercussions further along in the game play but without seriously ramping up the difficulty to the point the game is unable to be finished

>First person survival horror game
>You have a single handgun and ammo is extremely rare, maybe about 20 rounds in total can be found during the entirety of the game
>Gun handling works like it does in Receiver, with every action being manually executed by the player
>This also extends to aiming, which is completely freeform, meaning you can even aim the gun at yourself which brings us to the main gimmick of the game
>If the monster kills you, it's game over and you have to start over from the very beginning
>If you shoot yourself instead, you can continue playing from the last checkpoint you've reached
>The gun can also be used to shoot the creature to cause it to flinch in pain and allowing you time to flee and hide
>Ammo used to kill yourself will not be refunded upon continuing

Basically, if you include threats in the game, they need to matter beyond a simple reload, or nothing you create can stay scary after the first encounter.

I don't know if you can fix horror games. The genre is fundamentally broken because all it takes is you to develop an understanding of the mechanics and it is no longer scary. From my perspective it really doesn't matter how you structure the game because in the space of a few hours you've figured out how the game works and thus defeated the 'horror' with predictability. I think the only real way you could have a by and large legitimate horror game is to either keep the game very short, ensure that the monsters all have varying mechanics or extremely good AI to the point where it feels unfair. Resource scarcity and pressure are a must; the player should never be able to stop and collect themselves and should always be on the brink of resource/health starvation. Of course for most people this wouldn't be a fun experience so this hypothetical game would probably bomb and since I'm not a game dev in any sense of the word I have no idea how to balance it out.
>>

More short 2-5 hour experiences with unique gameplay and premise. Just like five nights at freddys, but don't fucking make a bajillion sequels because it ruins the point.

You see, horror is when you don't know what's coming. All great horror games like silent hill 2, alien isolation and amnesia are way too long. After a few hours you start to realize you're in a game, you stop being immersed and instead only see game mechanics.

I still stand by the notion that jumpscares are fine in moderation.
It's also a huge bonus to jumpsares if they require to play your way out of them so you feel the initial shock and have to deal with it while desperately trying to save your ass.
Just don't make it the norm and you're golden.

Also between monsters are generally shitty.
Either have a monster so outlandish no one would even imagine it normally, or try to make it somewhat close to a real experience that could happen.
Don't pussy foot in the middle with a werewolf or some shit.

And obviously atmosphere.
Really drive home the fact they they are all alone.

I think the best horror experiences were when the DayZ mod first come out because you did not want to die because of all the work it took to find your gear. I enjoyed hiding from zombies as a fresh spawn and avoiding contract with other players. Firefights were the best as you had so much to lose.

The point of the suicide mechanic is to be able to avoid permadeath, but as said, you can only do so as long as you have ammunition, and offing yourself obviously doesn't allow you to progress in the game.
>>
>>345155734
The two biggest things that ruin horror for me in games is speed and power. If you can get away from enemies fairly quickly, then tension doesn't get to build. Also, if you don't need to fear death in a game, there is no tension. Having a gun with practically infinite ammo, that is easy to reload, running around shooting things is about the furthest you can get from a scary game. You can create the scariest atmosphere possible, and even throw in fucking jump scares, but it is meaningless in a run and gun game.

Another thing that games don't seem to understand is that solitude helps build tension. This means no second player, and not having enemies around every corner. I remember when I was a kid, I went into my uncle's room and played RE2. All I did was walk around something like an empty police station for a few minutes without anything happening in the game. I ended up getting so creeped out from the solitude that I turned the game off and went downstairs where there was light. When I played the beginning of the game being surrounded by zombies, I actually wasn't half as afraid as when I was in that police station.

Problem with games where you can't fight back:
>No challenge because failure just means restarting at a checkpoint

Problem with games where you can fight back:
>Usually not scary because you can just kill the monster

Solution:
>A balanced approach where stealth is much easier but failure results in difficult and terrifying combat sections. More consequences for death.

I think Alien Isolation had a good approach. You could temporarily fend the alien off if it found you but once alerted it'd be on the hunt. It was way easier to just be sneaky and the atmosphere was always tense.

The balance is sorta lost nowadays as everyone is just copying the Amnesia formula that lets them skimp out on designing a combat system, ammo/supplies, and designing enemies who react instead of just making a AI that's just "run toward player". Throw in a couple things getting in your face and screaming and you get 90% of all horror games today.

Condmned handled it fine. Wish more games followed and improved its formula, because they didn't they went overboard and turned the main character into a kung fu master in the 2nd one.

Why is that? The weapon is not supposed to be an actual weapon (except when shooting the monster or something in the environment is a wiser course of action than shooting yourself), so ammunition should be considered to be like continues or tools.

If any of you played Steel Battalion, you would know about the whereabouts of that fucking eject button like it was your very own heart and soul. If you get your mech shot down in that game, you'd have a brief period of time when you could eject, and if you didn't, all your saves would be deleted. You could also eject at any point in the mission, losing your current mech in the process.

Shooting yourself in the face is lame as fuck, and is extremely counter-immersive for one. It's just going to feel like a going back in time mechanic as long as you keep a round available to you. Nobody is going to use that round on the monster EVER, since the consequences of doing so means that your entire save is possibly deleted. So all it does is give you a convenient quick load button for the moment the monster spots you. Terrible.

Compare that with Steel Battalion where each time you eject, you lose the mech in question and have to go on without it. Losing too many mechs (each one costs you precious resources to gain) means a game over, which again, is a loss of your save data.

But if there are an extremely limited amount of rounds available to you at any given time, then that same dilemma is achieved after a few deaths. You simply run out of resources to keep continuing.

The only problem then is that it is an immersion breaker, but that is hardly an issue that couldn't be solved with some creative thinking. Maybe the checkpoints are beds, and each time you shoot yourself you jolt awake in the last bed you saved your game at, the whole ordeal you just went through being a nightmare.

>But if there are an extremely limited amount of rounds available to you at any given time, then that same dilemma is achieved after a few deaths

Why would it be if you go back to the previous checkpoint where you have the rounds again?

And if you lose the rounds despite going back in time, then that's even more retarded and immersion breaking, since you aren't even going back in time at that point. And in that case nobody would ever use the rounds for anything EVER, since they are worth hundreds of times more to go back a little than shooting the monster.

make a pretty good case about how resident evil 4 wasn't so much of an action game, but an innovation on the typical formula, which resident evil 5 took for granted, and instead of doubling down on the horror/terror, they doubled down on the action instead

the way to make games creepy again is to stop making them so easy and to stop making them so simple [go here and kill this. walk down this single corridor map and complete this single objective, marked by a quest arrow and shiny objects]
and don't be so afraid to be vague in what the player is expected to do

If shooting the monster would give you time to hide until it leaves and then you could continue, would shooting the monster not be better than shooting yourself and then having to face it again with one less bullet, potentially having to shoot yourself again?

Knowing when to use a bullet to hinder the monster and when to use it to kill yourself would be a part of the challenge.
