Some people dislike games in which the controls are simple (e.g., those in which you attack enemies by clicking on them), because they're used to playing shitty games in which the controls are part of the difficulty.
Like the people who say shooters are better on consoles because the simple act of aiming is more challenging. They actually believe this is a good thing, as if soccer/football would also become a better game if they found a way to make the act of kicking the ball artificially more difficult. In fact, allowing the most basic actions in a game to be performed with ease allows deeper mechanics and other challenges to be introduced without overwhelming the player.
I'm not sure how much this applies to Diablo II because I only played the game very briefly, but I don't remember thinking the game could be improved by a necessity to press more buttons in order to perform basic attacks.
