As true as that it, Terraria's character and build variety is a lot nicer than DUDE DIAMOND ARMOR LMAO. Using different trinkets for better spelunking or fighting needs, finding cool synergies with magic or melee weapons that have neat effects. Much nicer art direction too.

Minecraft is built around building 3D blocky structures, and exploration. Combat (even with the 1.9+ updates) isn't Minecraft's Strong point.
Terraria has a clear progression system. Where Minecraft is open to interpretation as to what to do next, Terraria has a set path of armor and weapon tiers you go through, to tackle said boss of each tier. The games play rascally different. I like both, but Terraria is basically better than Minecraft in every way except mulitplayer and, well, 3D.

3D also has certain limitations that 2D does not. It's much harder to make certain optical illusions, and furthermore you have a much, MUCH smaller area of awareness when it comes to your environment and enemies around you.
Plus not only is 3D far more demanding of your machine, but it's also a lot harder to implement certain things, like layers where certain things can exist in the foreground, background, or midground, plus several things that can be done on their own layers that you'd need a larger space for in 3D settings unless you wanted to make processing slower, memory issues more common, filesizes bigger, and so on.

The first boss has a chance to randomly show up at night the very first time after you have 200 health. It's mostly skippable. You can also craft a summon item from the altars of evil in the asshole biomes with lenses.
The second boss will appear when you purge enough blocks to smash three evil cores in the asshole biomes' depths.
The third boss can be found by visiting the old man at the dungeon at night.
The fourth boss can be found by finding giant bee nests in the underground jungle.
The fifth can be found in the underworld, and marks the beginning of Hardmode, Terraria's second stage, where the world goes full FUCK YOU mode. You can summon it by dropping a certain item found from certain underworld mobs in a certain liquid.
Remember to make NPC homes. Also talk to your NPCs.

Not only does it add modifiers to all enemies (including bosses) that change stats and occasionally add new mechanics, but new equipment is added as well. Gunblades, that not only both have melee attacks and gunfire functions, but bonuses for using both in conjunction with each other. Greatbows that let you hold an arrow to charge it. Dueling Swords, with rapiers and foils that give you bonuses for making contact with enemies or attacks during a counter stance. Magic rings that run on replenishing charges, rather than consuming mana, and so on.
