Lets talk GPU's real quick. 1080 is out, and of course it is better than what AMD brought out so far. What is my best option at the moment, buy the 1080, wait for amd to release their flagship card, or buy the 1080 ti whenever that comes out?
>>
Go ahead and buy the most expensive one you can if you aren't going to do the research

you should never buy those high end state of the art cards
its more economicly to more frequently higher/mid level gpus

Bought a 1080 earlier this week.
It's okay, I can finally enjoy witcher at 80+ FPS.
Couldn't really get into it previously because the performance was kinda bad on my 980 at 1440p.

Not quite sure if that's worth $700
>>
>>345130787
You sound like a fucking moron.

Just buy whatever is most expensive if you're too stupid to do some basic financial risk assessment and spend five minutes on Google.
>>
>>345130850
Why isn't it worth it buying the higher end GPU's? Just because they will be out of date within a few years?

If your going to buy a 1080 wait for the aftermarket cards that are equipped with better coolers and are clocked higher out of the box

Same goes for the 1070, 1060 and RX 480
>>
>>345131098
I'm playing fucking runescape and neopets at 4k resolution you dumb fuck. I want to buy a $700 card to accommodate them.
>>
>>345130985
they are overpriced, simple as that
you get better results when you spend like +/- 300€ or 350$ every 2-3 years for a decent gpu as if you go all out every 4-5 years for those high end cards
>>
>>345131297
Be sure to get the founder's edition
>>
>>345130293
If you got money to blow and want to play at 4k, 1080 is fine but if your playing at 1080p or 1440p a 1070 will be fine and you can use the saved money elsewhere

but wait for >>345131224

It's not for me, it's for a friend who wants to dump 2k on his computer. He doesn't really want to have anything less than the best/newest high end GPU on the market.

If he wants a 1080 but doesnt have a 4k monitor might as well get him one with the 2k he wants to spend

Heres a part list for a pc with a 1080 and a 4k monitor for $2080
http://pcpartpicker.com/list/QZ2NQV

If he really wants all of the money to go into the pc you can add RAM, a Blu Ray drive, or an extra ssd instead of the monitor

If he doesn't want to go 4k he could make due with a 1070 honestly ,but if he wants the best the 1080 is the only choice. He'd also just spend the extra money on more storage and RAM

Example build http://pcpartpicker.com/list/jtQ9JV
>>
>>345132418
You could also SLI 1080s but theres no point in doing that since nothing will require that power and most devs dont support SLI anyway
>>
>>345133670
The 1070 does by far seem like a better value card. But does the new memory in the 1080 really make it that much better than the 1070?
>>
>>345133804
It would have been nice if they allowed us to SLI the 1060's, but i don't think anyone would buy the 1080 at that point
>>
>>345130293
You're an idiot if you buy expensive nvidia cards, look at the Titan now, even the 7950 is faster...

The future is DX12 and Vulkan, no current nvidia card is ready for any of the two.
>>
>>345133908
The 1080 is good for 4k and basically thats it, If your still on 1080 or 1440 a 1070 is the best option
>>
I just bought a 1440p 144hz screen for £486, now I want a 1080 but fuck me I'm not paying £650 for a graphics card.
>>
>>345134248
That's true but right now the only good amd card out is the 480 8gig and if your a "enthusiast" you want more power than that
>>
So, I'm getting tired of waiting for the 1070 to go down in price. I'm considering picking up that Shappire 480 and waiting to see what comes out next year.

Is the 480 actually worth buying? Or should I just deal with the bullshit mark up and buy a 1070?
>>
>>345134248
>The future is DX12 and Vulkan
Rewind for a bit.

>The future is Mantle!
>Bulldozer will destroy Intel
>games are going to start using all 8 cores

Don't be stupid. AMD is going to see some great results from their architecture with Vulcan. But it doesn't gain enough in DX12 to destroy anything and we both know Vulcan implementation won't be in the vast majority of games.

The current best implementation is from id, who are massive nerds working on a AAA PC lead game. You won't see results like that even from other Vulkan implementations.

>>345135971
The 480 is fine.

As long as you don't actually want max settings.
>>
>>345135971
depends on what card you are using right now
but getting a new gpu for the meantime seems retarded
>>
>>345136026
Yeah but when can we expect AMD to drop a decent flag ship card that can compete to the 1070 or 1080
>>
>>345136404
Who actually buys AMD Flagships? their mid range cards are where it's at.

It's alright. It's performance drop is just starting to get to me.
>>
>>345136551
Correction, mid range cards. You're right
>>
I wouldn't expect the 1080ti to come out this year
>>
>>345137968
Especially with the Titan P leaks.

The ti won't be out for a while.
>>
Anyone know when AMD expects to release any kind of mid range card?
>>
>>345139952
You mean the 470? That's not a midrange card. That's low end.
>>
>>345139952
Vega speculations/rumors have it out around October.
>>
>>345141372
I am getting quite interested with how Vega may perform. I really want to see how 480X would perform in async compute Vulkan. If it comes within striking distance of Fury X, then it will be a no-brainer to buy.
>>
>tfw got a 980 ti to play on my new 29 inch 1080p monitor

When you buy things one generation behind everyone else it's great.
>>
AMD is for multimedia and bitcoin, not gaming.
>>
>>345142980
980ti for a 1080p monitor? More than adequate if you are hoping for 60Hz. Hell, it will remain overkill for a while.
>>
>>345143109
GCN 7970 till 280x was godly for gaming. If you are too young to recall how overwhelmingly crushing the card was, then you are underaged and shouldn't be here.
>>
>>345143216
I'm still using it. With vulkan it gets 60 fps on doom ultra.
>>
>>345130293
Personally I'd stay away from Nvidia until Volta because that's when they'll start doing able to do async compute at the hardware level again. I have a bad feeling Pascal owners are going to get cucked HARD when that happens.
>>
>>345143346
I sold my 7970 2 days ago. I got 55-60 on high at 3440x1440 with Vulkan. Async compute is not a meme at all.
>>
>>345143460
1080 does scale with async compute though. You may be safe if you are using that card. 1070 and below though are pretty much EOL in that department.
>>
>>345143126
It's 2560x1080, so requires a little more power than regular old 1080.

And yeah, I'm buying it so that I'll be fine until at least mid 2017. Then I'll buy a cheap 1080 and maybe a 1440p monitor and be happy with it.

Hell, I even got a new mouse and mousepad (and an MSI dragon plush) with the card, both of which I've been meaning to buy for a while.
>>
>>345144636
Oh, the 1080 ultrawide. Your display isn't likely to have very high refresh rate. You should remain ok at 1017, and yeah, you may even find choose between a 1080 or a 1070 ti by that point in time.

>>
>1080 is out, and of course it is better than what AMD brought out so far.
No shit. It costs more.

480 is pretty great for the price tier its competing at. Good 1440p performance at $200.

>>345131383
This. Being overkill for most setups the 1080 would just be burning money. I honestly don't see any worthwhile difference to additional fps beyond the mid 40s
>>
Face it, you don't actually need it right now
Get the optimal after everything from 10xx and RX series comes out
>>
>>345130293

Or I can crossfire 2 R9's and get 80% more performance than an $800 card.
>>
>>345147525
I can't wait for this crossfire meme to die
>>
>>345136551
The 390 was sort of popular, AMD just got unlucky the 970 was one of the most popular graphics cards ever. It's too late for the 490 though, everyone will have a 1070 by the time they release it.
>>
>>345130293
Get a 1080 and then next year you can buy a GPU that actually supports DirectX 12 when Volta releases.
>>
>>345147525
>wanting to crossfire two cheap cards
Kill yourself
>>
Hope to see more and more games support good SLI, to the point where you can interface four weaker cards together to get several times better performance than the top card.
>>
>>345136026
I'm fully prepared for Zen to be a complete disaster. Sure their APU's will sell because of consoles and maybe OEMs but their gaming CPU's are going to be as shitty as the FX series. I love how much hope /g/ has riding on Zen, "It will beat Haswell, swear on me mum!"
>>
>>345130918
80 fps? That's it? The next time some shitty sort-of-good-looking-but-unoptimized game like TW3 comes out you're going to get sub 60
>>
>>345142980
>29 inch
>1080p

Jesus boy, I hope you sit at least a metre from the screen or have shit eyesight.

1080p in CURRENT YEAR is nothing to brag about unless you're a consolefag.
>>
>>345145376
>I honestly don't see any worthwhile difference to additional fps beyond the mid 40s

Then there is actually something physically wrong with your eyes or your brain.

A normal human can effortlessly recognise the difference and will always favour the higher framerate.
>>
>>345150146
>metre

????
>>
>>345150146
It's the same height as my current 24 inch 1080p monitor and whilst a higher resolution would be good it's not paramount that I get one.

I've got perfect eyesight, and I'm not bragging about it whatsoever. Just because I don't subscribe to your high /g/-tier standards doesn't mean I'd ever stoop to consolefag levels.
>>
>>345151001
It's a typo.
>>
>>345150146
Oh wait, did you think I was getting a 29 inch 16:9 monitor instead of a 21:9 one? Because yeah, I agree with you, the PPI on that would be atrocious. 29 inch Ultrawides have the minimum PPI I'm willing to deal with before needing higher resolutions.
>>
The great debate:
1440p or 144Hz?
There's only one good answer, remember.
>>
>>345130293
Wait for non-reference cards from both teams and compare performance. They'll have better coolers and are factory oc'd.

You're a retard if you buy reference cards.
>>
Is 3DMark worth getting on Steam? The function of comparing your scores online and overclocking seems useful..

>>345151326
both, or at least a 1440p with a refresh rate higher than 60hz (mines 96hz)
>>
>>345151326
Both nigga.
>>
>>345147525
Crossfire 480s is still less power than a single 1080, though just barely. Then you also have to deal with the fact that dual GPUs is a fucking meme.
>>
>>345151326
If you want image quality go 4k (you can still run games at 1440p/60hz), for refresh go 1440p/144hz.
