I wouldn't say it worked fine, "not terribly interesting" definitely doesn't sound fine to me

You had to fiddle with 3 different menus, the weapons were gimped without upgrades (alt-fires are essentially mandatory), the majority of upgrades were just trivial % increases, and you can ultimately get everything which makes the whole system seem even more arbitrary

They're basically put into games to keep people with low attention spans busy with the game since if they didn't have constant number upgrading they probably wouldn't keep playing. I don't really get it either.

Similarly with iron sights, I do like them and think they have a place in video games but I think they're way too overused and don't really add anything substantial to quite a lot of games that they're in.

Megatextures are actually a good idea with several benefits but apparently there's a lot of issues with implementation. Part of which is that they take up a shitton of HDD space so even if your game is 50GB you're still going to have low res looking textures. Though the tech does have its downsides besides that too, like apparently real time lighting just doesn't work at the moment with megatextures.

idtech5 was also lacking in some other ways, like using a pretty old version of OpenGL.

For me it was poor because of really boring linear levels, enemies were all pretty basic and harder difficulty was basically "shoot at bullet sponge enemies praying you won't run out of ammo, run around while healing for a bit and repeat". Shooting itself was nice though
