PS1 games have generally aged like dogshit. Early 3d games in general, really.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is still great. But that's 2d.
>>
>>345112385
What about the Sodoku series? I heard those were PS1's best games from Kotaku.

I know this is a bait thread, but the Spyro games have aged quite well if you ask me.

N64 games are blurry muddy messes with midi music and are devoid of content.
Your standards are probably pretty low, mediocre PS1 titles are way better than the best of the best N64 games.

Spyro & Crash games still look good and are still fun.
>>
>>345112182
ff9 and chrono cross are the only ones really, you need a end of the life ps1 game for it to still be playable unfortunatly.
>>
Most games with pre-rendered backgrounds have aged really well, especially if you have a PS2 hooked up to a CRT with component or s-video. The backgrounds in Chrono Cross and FFIX looking fucking amazing, the latter looking better than the new PC release since it isn't upscaled and filtered to hell and back. It's a shame the PSX wasn't as good as the N64 for 3D rendering because those games would have aged incredibly.
>>
>>345112182
Final Fantasy IX still looks pretty great.
>>

PS1 games in general have aged much better thanks to not having to deal with a ridiculously microscopic working memory. Like seriously, I'm still to this day amazed as to how they managed to make SM64's scenery have so few polygons, have Mario look like a bunch of sausages tied together, and they STILL couldn't afford to have actual 3D trees in the game.

I don't know about that bro. N64 could run RE2 on one cart with high-res textures, high quality music samples. Yes, with less extra content than the PS1 version but that's a good compromise if you want analog controls as the cherry on top.

Seems like PS1 has low standards since the original controller doesn't even have sticks. C'mon mang!

IIRC from when 9 came out, the devs said they had reached the pinnacle of PS1 capability with it. Kinda makes sense when you see what 7 looked like (originally developed for Super NES before switching to Playstation) compared to 9 (With 8 as a nice go-between)

I honestly can't think of 3 games that gave a better example of graphics improvement over a console's lifetime. In fact there are no games I can think of on ps3 that improved that much in terms of graphics.

At least you didn't need to be some 3 armed mutant freak to operate the original PS1 controller, and the DualShock came around in good time basically making the N64 controller a joke with it's one analog.

For the record, N64 is incapable of rendering 3D because it's all processed by a reality chip which is an early extremely powerful 3DFX card. Those aren't "sprites" you see, but a model that uses only one texture relative to the camera to save processing power.

Now, show me a PS1 or PC game from before the year 2000 that has a tree you can climb and jump or so a hand-stand somersault off.

Go, I'll wait.

Why would any competent dev waste their time and resources adding such pointless trivial bullshit instead of adding more meaningful content or polishing the game?

Enjoy your hideous techdemo collectathon where they decided to add climbing and somersaulting off trees instead of developing a tolerable camera system that doesn't kill you.

No 3D game for the PS1 aged well. Even those using prerendered backgrounds like Final Fantasy aged like shit because of the low poly models.

Games like pic related aged well because hand painted backgrounds and sprites are timeless.

If you don't like it now then your not really a fan of that type of game. Also if people want it in better graphics they should play the 3ds version. The game has a wonderful world and story to tell and that is something that time can't change.

In response to OP's question as well, anything that was in 2d at the time. People remember the late 90's block 3d a lot but forget the strong catalogue of 2d game that the Ps1 had.

Sharper but wobbly textures. Also wobbly textures. A lot of gradient fills instead of textures.
Better sprites and 2D graphics.
CD quality music and sound.
Bigger game size, so more high-res pictures.

More polygons.
Textures are muddier but stable. Also more textures at the same time.
Much better shaders.
Better draw distance in games.

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver was a full 3D world with interactable objects and weapons, platforming, the ability to switch between the physical world and the spirit world with a button press, and the option to teleport to to any of a series of portals scattered throughout the world.

All this without one loading screen.

I think the PS1 did generally have better textures but they still looked like shit and were filled with squares and stuff, which I think was caused by no texture filtering. So whatever benefit the PS1 would have had with slightly higher resolution textures is ruined by how they were actually rendered.

Both consoles had benefits to them but both also had issues that limited those benefits. N64 was more powerful but had fuck all for storage space and the PS1 had more storage space but wasn't able to render all that stuff as well as the N64 could have if it had more storage.

Metal Gear Solid
Final Fantasy VII and IX
A few other JRPGS
A few 2D games like Castlevania

That's pretty much it.

But it's not like N64 games have fared much better.
>>

A lot of sprite games aged really well. Legend of mana is a good example. Pre-rendered stuff aged mostly well too, like the oddworld titles.

Some titles like crash bandicoot (mostly 2 and 3 though) and megaman legends aged really well too.

>ITT some anons hating on the PS1's Arcady graphics

It looked much better than the blurry mess that was the N64. The proof is now that we have upscalers and emulators to play this old hardware, we can take a closer look at what was actually being sent to our TVs. PS1 stuff generally looks much crisper and cleaner. N64 looks like ass in its natural state, even through a framemeister. If you aren't using an emulator and are using an actual console, the only way to fix this is to mod the console to remove that filter.
Point is, natural N64 graphics only look passable through a blurry, low res CRT where you wouldn't have noticed it that much anyway. Trying to play it today just looks horrible, while PS1 actually improves in quality (slightly) when you remove the natural fuzz of a CRT.
>>
>>345132051
That' true now, but at the time it was a form of antialiasing.
>>
Not very many.

When people try to tell me that shit like Spyro the Dragon and Ape Escape 1 and Mega Man Legends have aged well, all I can think is that nostalgia is one hell of a drug.
>>
>>345131992
Great. Now now I have to download it again.
>>
>>345132051
It's actually the opposite. PS1 still looks like shit even at higher resolutions while N64 games look fine generally with the higher resolution counteracting the blur somewhat.
>>
>>345115154
FF9 aged well
Vagrant Story aged well
>>
>>345132217
but anon, spyro did actually age well

>while PS1 actually improves in quality (slightly) when you remove the natural fuzz of a CRT.

Bullshit. With PS1 you get jaggies out the ass, warping textures, jiggling polygons, and you get shitloads of dithering. You can see some of it in the picture you posted.

In motion all PS1 games look even worse.
>>
>>345132051

People don't play n64 for the graphics though

I would hope people don't play any games for the graphics, that would be weird as hell
>>
>>345113871
>At least you didn't need to be some 3 armed mutant freak to operate the original PS1 controller

You cannot name a single N64 game which required the use of all three handles simultaneously.

I wanted to strangle people who tried to find ways of holding the controller so as to operate all the buttons at once, because it was never needed.

I first played through this game 2 years ago, the graphics may not have been too incredible and the monsters were rather laughable, but the ATMOSPHERE holy shit, I was on edge the entire god damn game especially during the night stages I actually turned my lights off while playing to enhance the effect, I could honestly recommend this game to anyone a bit more open minded about games

Not in "shift mode".

But I guess no one used that. So I'll concede that some games used the whole controller. But using the left-side buttons for rarely-used inventory items doesn't break the game. The default PC controls of Duke Nukem 3D make the use of inventory items awkward as fuck too.

Highly-stylized art typically holds up better than stuff that's trying to be more cutting-edge.
The trade off is that these games are typically seen as primitive at release because they have to deal with whatever "realistic graphics" from the time period look like.
Megaman Legends could easily pass as a cool-looking indie game by today's standards if it had reworked controls and a better translation.

I personally would love to see a bunch of highly-stylized PS2-era games like Killer 7 and SMT Nocturne get rereleases at higher resolutions with more sharpening

This. The prerendered bgs and detailed character models still look great. Certain areas still have that 'wow' factor due to the attention to detail and how fucking gorgeous they are.

And say what you want about CC but the OST is fantastic. I've now got this song stuck in my head.

Really 1&2 should be played as 1 game. Also grab the PAL versions (if you're emulating) and slap a NTSC patch on it. The real NTSC versions had audio missing from the strategy battles

You kidding me? Look at a game that was heralded for it's graphics like MGS/FFIX and then compare a non FMV, non emulated picture to one of Majora's Mask or Conker's Bad Fur Day and tell me which is easier on the eyes. The PS1 was ugly as fuck and is somewhat fixed by emulation being able to do things like take away the pixelated mess of unfiltered textures, wobbling rendering, and upscaling it to something that doesn't bleed the eyes. N64 you can actually take away the blur now on the console itself.

It's not that the games themselves have, but rather their graphics. Most 3D PS1 and N64 games look absolutely horrible in this day and age and "HD" rereleases cannot salvage them. The games are still fun and good games but yeah, they just look like crap.

That's not to say there weren't exceptions. Games like Parasite Eve 2, FF9, Banjo Kazooie/Tooie, Goemon's Great Adventure, and Chrono Cross all held up pretty well. Nothing amazing but they're still pretty easy on the eyes. Games like OoT, Mario 64, and FF7 though? Mother of christ do those look terrible. I also have to make an honorable mention of FF8 because, while leaps and bounds better than FF7, character skins were pixelated messes that wreaked havoc on your eyes when you coupled them with a lack of any AA. Didn't matter if it was on a CRT or HD screen. It looked terrible.
