Horror games are shit tier. Only underage get scared by games.
>>
>>345111428
Jump scares are the purest form of human instinct. It actually scares you.

I'd rather be jump scared than dick around in a forest for an hour waiting for something to happen. That shit's boring.
>>
>>345111428
Wait a minute...
>>
>>345111428
I'm afraid I can't do that, anon.

whats wrong with jump scares?

In b4 some fag says they are cheap or some other dumb excuse. They are perfectly fine
>>
>>345111970
The difference is that the image you posted is cute.

That...thing...is not.
>>
>>345112790

they're not cute in any sense of the word either

Alright, then what's a good example of a scary game that does not rely on jumpscares?

No, that's not SCARING you, that's just like you said, a human reaction. Animal instinct. A reflex. Just because I'm cutting onions doesn't mean I'm crying, and just because I jump out of my seat doesn't mean I feel scared.
>>
>>345113198
Fatal frame, silent hill or any japanese horror game that isn't stupid shit like resident evil
>>
>>345111428
The Resident Evil and Silent Hill games are full of jump scares and they're pretty fun.
>>
>>345113394
RE yeah but the others are more about the spooky atmosphere and setting than jump scares
>>
>>345113307
In Fatal Frame when you go into camera mode this becomes your control scheme. Had an equally hard time just trying to fight the camera than the ghosts
>>
>>345113307
Nice false equivalence fallacy.

Onions make you cry, but trigger no emotion. The same can't be said for jumpscares. They do make people scared.
>>
>>345113605

I only ever played Fatal Frame 3, but I believe it had the same controls as the first 2 games. I didn't struggle at all with the camera, but I did have to get used to it at first. I actually liked the way you had to get up close to the ghosts and scare yourself to do more damage.
>>
>>345113931

They are equivalent. Come on, how many people played Fnaf and did not get scared? Not saying some people don't find jumpscares to be scary, but I personally find jumpscares to be more annoying than scary. However, I think more people find the tension and buildup to a jumpscare they know is coming to be more scary than the jumpscare itself.
>>
>>345114291
If the build up of jumpscares makes them scary then doesn't that make them scary?

If the alternative is to take them out then there is no pay off.

Also, people seem to think things are jumpscares when they aren't. Just because the game shows you something scary suddenly doesn't make it a jumpscare. Not that I needed to add that, I just hate it when people think something is a jumpscare when it isn't
>>
>>345111428
Post a single good horror game without any jumpscares
Even all SH games used them.
>>
>>345115354
Scratches was amazing and filled with atmospheric tension with absolutely no jumpscare.
>>
>>345112853
it looks like shit desu
>>
>>345113198

The Metro game series was scary now and then. Also S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
>>
>>345111428
Not necessarily. Games that rely solely on jumpscares instead of creepy abiances and sound design are shit. But good horror games use jumpscares too although sparingly.

IT'S A TUNA BRO
>>
>>345113198
Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of The Earth is good. It's faithful to the source material and captures the vibe of the Cthulhu mythos pretty well. The controls and combat are atrocious though.
>>
>>345112349
They're often over used and implemented poorly. Jumpscares are fine when done with proper build up and used sparingly. When it's used and abused like in fnaf games it loses its effect and becomes annoying and boring.
>>
Really, jumpscares or not, I like horror games because of their dark or surreal themes and I think jumpscares add to the experience, but only If the game has care and love put into it.
Shitty unity screamfests made by 12 years old are the only shit tier.
>>
lab x-18 is pretty spooky
>>

>Re
>jumpscares

Like I don't think resident evil is scary, I always felt that silent Hill was the game with good atmosphere
But it doesn't really have jumpscares, and even then, it has a buildup
>>
>>345118445
Are there any good modern horror games? It seems like they are either shitty jumpscare galore ones made on unity for Markiplier to scream at or action fps with a slightly spooky theme. Only good one that comes to mind is Dead Space.
>>
>>345111428
fnaf was 10/10 atmosphere with tons of jumpscares but onlyi when you died
>>
Why is it always spaniards or mexicans who can't get enough of cheap jumpscare shit? Games, movies, youtube pranks; it's always popular with the bean people.
>>
>>345118968
>fnaf
Most cancerous horror series on the planet. Sure the first one wasn't that bad but I wilp never understand the hype surrounding it.
>>
>>345119224
Tell that to markiplier and pewdiepie. Shitty jumpscare games like Slender Man became popular because of 12 year olds in general.
>>
>>345118829
Alien isolation was pretty good and re7 is looking good.
>>
>>345119535
Are they trying to turn re7 into Silent Hill? That's kinda ehat it looks like.
>>
>>345119410
>pewdiepie

He doesn't even react to jumpscares now, it made a lot of his fans mad when he played fnaf4 and didn't even flinch. He's still loud and obnoxious but at least he's not as bad as markiplier.
>>
>>345119752
Just the demo, the main game is supposedly gonna have combat and other features. Might be in first person still.
>>
>>345111428

When is that remaster coming out? They originally said Nov. 2016 way back when, right?
>>
>>345111428

I see this all the time and I think it's a silly sentiment.

Imagine if a game was *guaranteed* to have zero jump scares. You knew going in then jump scares are not part of the experience any way. You don't think this would decrease the tension significantly?

i don't think they have a fixed date up. last update on the game so far was on Peter's model update, infused with their ruskie philosophy and wisdom.
>>
>>345124252
There are some autistic silent hill fans that raved about how silent hill was all about building tension to a jump scare that would never come.
I don't exactly agree with that phrasing, but it's relevant to what you said.

>Okay, so the Silent Hill games don't do jumpscares, that's good

Sometimes they're done well
>>
I think jumpscares can be tasteful sometimes. Layers of fear had some pretty cool jumpscares.
>>
To be honest I feel like I don't see enough jump scares

After playing some resident evil, dead space, it seems like the games always hint at jumpscares but they never really happen. It's disappointing. It''s like video game blueballs.

Oh fuck off, the only classic Resident Evil that had jumpscares was RE2 and it only had, like, two jumpscares.
>>
>>345122870
Hell yes. SOMA was awesome
>>
>>345111428
They're the only ones that can get a spook out of me though so that automatically makes them not shit tier in my opinion.
Does anyone actually get scared or even spooked by horror movies? I just don't see how its even possible. I've watched dozens of them and I've never felt like that.
>>
>>345126247
The Thing is still a creepy movie.

I also remember The Evil Dead actually scaring me a bit when Ash is in the cellar and the light bulb fills up with blood. I don't remember why but that was an actually unnerving scene.
>>
>>345113931
>Shitty food analogies
Onions make your eyes water anon. That's not the same as crying.
>>
>Le jump scares are bad meymey
>I only like Lovecraftian horror guise ;)
>>
>>345126621
Jumpscares make me jump, not afraid or scared. It's just a natural reflex to sudden noise/movement, like eyes watering is a natural reflex to onions
>>
>>345111950
This pretty much.

There are only two methods you can use to scare a player:

The jump scare is the first thing everyone thinks of. It's cheap, it's overdone, people don't like it but it gets the job done.

Instilling a feeling of foreboding, usually by restricting information and only supplying it little bits at a time. This builds a deeper, richer level of fear, but unfortunately, it's unsustainable and usually deflates before it even has time to peak.

I don't think video games as a medium can be pushed much further in the horror genre because what we fear cannot happen to us when we sit behind a screen, even with a headset strapped to our heads.
