But he's exactly doing that? the MIRAI anime is the end, Kira Kira describe events before the MIRAI killing game, and Zetsubou supposedly happens before the despair events and describe how it happens. That plus the whole novels are more than sufficient to end the plot.

I feel really mixed about DR3 right now. Despair arc seems to be blatently going on fan service, but it seems to not even be 'normal' to it's own standards. Nekomaru and Akane in particular seem to have the strength that could have ended Danganronpa 2 in about 2 minutes.
So far the only redeeming quality of Despair is webm related. Ultimate Farmer's voice is also cringy as hell when they are trying to make Future 'mature'.

I'll be honest and say it's not necessary but it does explain where certain characters are and why they haven't shown up in 3 yet. It gives more insight to how fucked up the outside world is because we haven't gotten to see much of it in the first two games. Despite the flaws, it's still a really fun game.

They don't just have to "figure out" who he/she is, they also have to kill him/her. Most probably the old way of killing, but they may also hold voting sessions and execute whoever they think is the traitor, like voting sessions in a mafia game. We'll see next episode.

1. She dies in the past, much sad, very despair
2. If they want to go full storytale ending it's revealed in a shocking twist she survived to the future arc where she saves the dayand maybe dies there
3.Double shocking twist, she survived to future arc but is now evil/had Junko's mind implanted into her body

The characters in Danganronpa are built so they are memorable, usually with their "one trick pony" tropes on the surface. There's the genki girl, the sleepy gamer, etc. This is because they can die at any point, and the writers want us to remember them.
The free time events and other material such as novels dive deeper and reveal other parts about these characters, such as why Nidai is such an energetic team manager, Mioda's life philosophy, Yamada's reason for being a manga artist, etc. The characters are written wonderfully when looked at more in depth.
The characters do suffer, because the trials mostly ignore this very depth about them. They're one trick ponies if you don't care to spend any time with them.
