I'm going to be on a plane for 14 hours today. I'm taking my 3ds with me. I was thinking of getting either the new Monster Hunter game or Fire Emblem Awakening.
What would you recommend?

None of the Nintendo handhelds last anywhere close to 14 hours but anyway it depends what you're into, really. MH is a good pick because it's got such an insane amount of content. Otherwise any Pokemon game, really.

Some of us genuinely never get tired of MH. It never stops being fun for me.
If you want something challenging, go with MHX. FE:A is so piss easy you can sleep through it so only choose it if you're big on waifus. Otherwise, MHX will be the better choice all around in my opinion.
Avoid Awakening.
Get Birthright if you've never played a FE game before.

Conquest is better but the best versions is Awakening.

It really doesn't matter that much but if you're going on a 14 hour binge you may want to consider printing out a mechanics guide.
You'll be fine without it really but MH does have some obfuscated mechanics that are hard to understand the first time like how to use trapped meat or how to KO a monster or what sleep means for a monster.
You'll be fine either way but if you start getting into it you might appreciate having the deeper stuff on hand for if you get into the "how can I play better" mood.

Kinda sad that like with Bravely Default 2, if I want to get back into either series I'll just play the prior version.
Fates turned me off almost immediately by going "The actual good decision is locked off until you intentionally pick the bad ones first". When other games do it it's usually near the end of the game so it's not the worst thing in the world, but Fates makes you do it right away and blatantly shows you that picking only one side is the wrong decision so it just looks like you're making a game-long mistake

Your 3ds battery won't last even half of that, especially playing powerhungry 3d games. Find a book or two and read it, or download something on your phone if it has decent battery. You can also sleep or listen to music.

This should have a good ammount of what you'll want, in particular look up weapon guides for ones you want to use so you know the basics of how to use them.
For example, one of the Great Sword's best attacks is the strike used while you have it mounted on your back out of combat stance (sorta unsheathing). So half of Great Sword play involves using that strike and putting the sword back away to preposition.
The biggest thing that will be missing from that guide is Generation's stance system along with weapon updates so you may want to look those up but it won't be too bad if you don't
A general primer of tips off the top of my head...
-If the monster starts drooling and panting, it's low on stamina and will seek food to recover. You can either use poisoned meat to fuck them up or chase them to their feeding ground and get a free shot.
-Sleeping monsters take 3x damage on the next attack so go for the biggest strike you have on like their head.
-Monsters have different vulnerabilities around their body, the more hit-stop on a strike the more your weapon is 'sinking in' and hitting a weak part (often the head). The more blood splatter the more damage you're doing.
Those are the big ones that are easy to miss that I can think of that might not be very clear in the tutorial.

Oh, and you get more drops for breaking parts of the monster like their claws or their horns so if you're looking for materials like that it means you need to hit those parts more while hunting. monsters with longer tails can have them cut off if you're using a bladed weapon and the broken off tail also counts as another carve to loot from.

If you're talking about capture, no that's Limping which is different.
If a monster is limping it means they're low on life and will try to flee and sleep at their nest. When their like this you can use a trap, then tranq bombs while they're stuck in the trap to capture. Capturing offers a bit more loot and different drop rates than just killing.

That won't work if they are not limping most of the time. They can be capture before that of course but generally they aren't showing weakness before limping while capturable.

Quick tip :
If you ever run low on tranq, throwing one then throwing a flash bomb used to do the trick, but I'm not sure about MHX
