I like it because its usually the tactical job of the game. As a tank you need to be paying attention to the agro, rotation and shit; as a dps you need to closely watch your rotation and repeat the same shit untill the mob dies.
The healer on the other side is totally reactionary and dynamic because you need to adapt and heal whoever is taking more damage.
I also like it because sometimes I have to face some difficult decisions like letting the tank die and waste a huge cd on his rez while keeping the party buffed or spreading my heals and hoping that no one dies.
That said, its easier to carry a bad party as a healer than as a tank, if your equip is not highly op for the encounter.
In fps, mobas and other games that have healers I'm usually the support because they are the shot caller and decide everything your team will do to achieve victory.

I've played dota 2 and hots. In those games its usually the support whos the captain of the team. I'm not even talking about one character or the other being more tactical, it's just the support role have more time to command the entire teams and their rotations because they aint focused on farming or taking merc camps that much.
That gives them time to analyze the map and coordinate the rotations and ganks of every single hero of the team. The same on fps with classes, the healer (medic on tf2 for example) has more time to think about what is happening in the general picture and how is the best approach to win the game.

It was one thing I felt Planetside 2 did well. I could go into a room with a shotgun and clear out the enemies, then heal/revive any of my dead allies and we could push onward. Healing is fun because it gives you another aspect of the fight you have to pay attention to. DEDICATED healing is boring as shit because it takes you out of the fight almost completely.
I have had plenty of fun playing the healing classes in games like Priston Tale and Guild Wars because healers in those games still get to fight back. Every other class has a healing option to fall back on so you aren't as focused on player health bars and can actually have a bit more fun with it. Healing from a healing class is still a better option, though, and means you pretty much always have something to add to a group.

I dunno Anon, on FFXIV I've been maining WHM and SCH and having some pretty good fun.
For example, on the Whiping City the new raid add in the latest patch, one of the boss, Ozma (yeah FFIX's Ozma) is especially fun has a SCH since you have to:
-Put bubble on every aoe
-Micro manage your fairy to put its buff and HoT on tank
-Dispel dots on fellow players
-Eat up the energy balls that deal 8k damage and explode on a raid wide 10k damage if left alone
-Throw DoTs on bosses
-Literally save your fucking party every 20 sec around 20%HP (because holyshit people are bad at this game) by using your shield and other damage mitigation buffs
-Heal everyone back up
-While Micromanaging your MP
-Stay alive at the worst moment possible to use the LB3 to rez everyone
For a midcore player like me, Ozma is a lot of fun.I'm thinking on working on a AST and have been working on learning Nidhogg Extreme too

I'm actually glad that Mercy's Pistol can deal out some damage, so I can pick at Reinhart's shield or snipe Bastions with it. For healers in general, you're hated unless you carry your team. Riders of Icarus has a pretty good healer. Your job is to raise your crit chance through the roof in order to break down the boss's status immunity buff. Debuffing your enemies lets you handle a much larger crowd than you'd expect and your special healing resource gives you the extra defense to tank hits as long as you don't spend it recklessly.
Spending your healing motes (3 max) lowers your defense but also gives you access to super powerful skills. A great single target heal that works as an aoe debuff against enemies and triggers more healing over time for each enemy that's affected by your damage/healing over time skill. A crazy strong fear that also drains an enemy's life and gives it to your party members. Even a couple straight up damage spells that just turn your enemies to dust.
I play healer because when that dogshit warlock who can only sit in one spot with his thumb up his asshole spamming one over and over again only to die to aoe I won't be there to protect him. If you spam, "I need healing" or are just a brain damaged idiot I won't fucking heal you.

the main appeal of ffxiv is that you can dress up your character through the glamour system and play any job on one character.
so if you want to be a raw potency healslut or a mitigation healslut, it's up to you. if you're also into roleplaying, Balmung and Gilgamesh are good servers for that.

I usually don't play healers but after playing Mercy I can understand both sides of the story. I enjoy having a competent healer on my side and when I'm doing a decent job of healing I know from experience that my team appreciates me and everyone's happy in general.
I can understand wanting to feel that all the time in games where healers make a very big difference.
