Here's the story:
In 2017, the Ravagers used giant bugs to kick our fucking asses before invading. In response, the governments of our planet formed the Earth Defense Force, which lost basically every battle, except the ones you're involved in. You're sort of an un-named, faceless, badass hero rank-and-file soldier. Anyway, you and your crew strike a critical blow to send the Ravagers packing and the EDF exterminates all the rest of the giant insects. World's saved.
8 years pass. Earth is basically rebuilt. The EDF has made Earth a much better place because now everyone is too scared of aliens coming back to even have time to think about fighting each other, so the whole time is spent on integrating recovered Ravager technology into new technology and weaponry for the EDF.
2025, the Ravagers come back to kick our asses once again, using evolved giant insects and new robots. The EDF isn't quite as much of a chump as last time and wins a few battles, but is always eventually manhandled by one of the stack of aces the Ravagers have up their sleeves. Anyway, you're Storm Team now, and you're still badass, and, well, you can play the rest for yourself.

While I agree that D3 asks way too much to the game, and it's been true for 2025 and 4.1 on PS3, you get a lot of bang for your buck. Vanila missions alone will take over 20 hours to complete.

All of them are shitty weapons that become obsolete after first mission unless you play on easy or normal. Then they become obsolete after 10th mission.
I do agree that they should've packed all DLCs into GOTY edition for PC release and priced it $40. D3 are strange.

Gold ants and silver spiders are present in vanilla game in 4.1, like all other 2025 DLC enemies.

The missions in them are a lot tougher and grander than most of the vanilla missions.
They will throw insane arrangements of tough enemies at you.
In one mission you have to deal with 3 Quadruped Fortress, an Argo, Flying Drones, and a whole battalion of Hectors.
