>>345065071
By giving a reason for everyone in the game to care about a character aside from just existing.

>>345065839
Ok, and then what happens? Sounds like they're gonna get dragged into some shit anyway
>>345065839
That isn't really much of a story, but it's basically the game I wanted FF X-2 to be.
>>345065839

Cowboy bebop, guardians of the galaxy, etc
Be more original anon
>>345065271
A town filled with monsters and you're the only human. It's a nice place except it gets kinda creepy and filled with xenophobia. Eventually explore quantum mechanics and fear of god. I'm already making it.
>>345066426is it an rpg maker game?
post good concepts that you want to write about, but you are a lazy cunt that will never do anythingacutegirl can suddenly transport through dimensions by accident, every episode she's trying to escape from whatever trouble she makes in that universe

Their parent, who has undergone multiple gender reassignment surgeries, has opted to send the mc to an all boys boarding school. However, unknown how they truly feel about themselves, the main character, in a twist of fate, decides to flea the country in a fit of rage and confusion. Trying to find its true identity, it spends the next 4-5 years of its life studying gendernomics in a 3rd rate community college safe zone, surrounded by nothing but genderless food and nonbinary plants for company. Armed with a secondhand laptop from the thriftstore with a built in webcam and keylogger, you broadcast your opinions and thoughts to others like you, and have to fight the nonexistent struggles of being overlooked by your peers, not being harassed in public, not discriminated against, and most of all, the illusion that your gender actually exists.
Will the main character figure out what they truly are? Will they overcome the enormous odds and indifferences to become the attack helicopter they always knew they were? Find out in La Toombleur: Reckoning
>>345066426
sound lovecraftian, is that your inspiration?

None of those are games though.
>>345065849
Haha looks like it's my time to shine!
>>345066426
no, it's VN trash. If I can get the story done (which is pretty far along) then i'll work on making it a real game of some sort.
>>345066749
Partly, yes... since I'm living right where Herbert West: Reanimator took place. Another is damned by chuck palahniuk

So xe's a quirky, strong, independent freedom fighter who is a student of the Liberal Arts Academy of the People's Republic of San Francisco. Jamal lives a privileged life of equality and social justice with xir culturally diverse friends in this utopia thanks to the legendary prophet Bernie, who defeated Shitlord Trumpus and his army of misogynistic manchildren 400 years ago and forever banished them to the swampy bayous of the deep south.
But get this, it turns out that Trumpus had summoned a mysterious deity known as Kek during the war with Bernie, with the problematic intention of dooming the world into a misogynistic cesspool where tje Shitlords rule. After getting triggered by this problematic discovery, it's up to Jamal and xir friends to travel through time and save destiny with privilege checking and quirky pop culture references!

>also, how can I evade mary sue territory?
Give the character a sense of individual agency that doesn't require a fan to self-insert to find them interesting. The biggest reason why people hate Mary Sues is because it's not fun to look at a character and think "Wow they are strong and cool and handsome and smart and the best at everything, just like I wish I was!" versus "Wow, they are strong and cool and handsome and smart and the best at everything, though there are other characters in this universe who are similar, and the interactions between these characters makes each one of them stand out as an individual with a sense of agency, rather than just a dress-up doll made for perfection".

My game won't have much story, so thanks.
But it will have bikini skins to piss off feminists.
>>345068791
That's right, it had a bigger cast. Which makes it more interesting by default than just some little girl going through it alone.

I'm actually writing a VN. Unfortunately can't draw for shit.
I'm gonna write the entire story before I get anyone else on the project though.

>>345069097
A large cast can compensate for lack of character depth so it can be just as interesting. Not that having a small cast means it's bad either. FF6 has a relatively large cast of characters and they are mostly flat (mostly... not all). FF10 has a smaller cast but is in no way less interesting than FF6 as an example.
>>345069287
You'll burn out... commission place holder assets to see how you like it. A huge part of a VN is making it visual and therefore you don't need to explain everything in detail. Just be furry trash like me.
>>345069287
protip: be a cunt with the artist
if you leave him be and make their own shit, your project is going to lose its focus and you won't enjoy the final product
you are the director after all, if you don't like it, don't touch your heart and tell him
source: shitty experiences with a soft hearted director
>>345069565
I have a lot of writing to do first. Part of why I'm writing it is because I don't have a lot to do while waiting to teach again, I can commission some pieces when I have one or two character routes done.
>>345069645
I've directed plays and such before. There's always some leeway for artists/actors to put in their own flair or designs, but I agree. There's no point in putting out a substandard product.

>>345069284
>>345070330
Thanks, man. Took a look at your patreon and I can dig the idea that you've got going on. I feel that VN's have the potential to do great things with nonlinearity that "real" games cannot handle at this point in time (or feel that they can bother with at least).
>>345070565
As a teacher, I can tell you that you should always write something at least once per day, even if it's just a summary of something that you've read or watched. You could just spend some time making a character/setting bible that you could eventually pull from down the line.
>>345068685
>Sliders.
>>345070741
Thank you very much. I know it's not for everyone so that means a lot. VNs do have great potential for story telling. However, adding choices in the mix means that I have to rewrite the same scene over and over and over and over with subtle changes that mean everything. Be aware that you'll have to write the same thing at least four or five times. You do bring up an important point of writing every day. I need to get back on doing that.
>>345065071
by writing a good character
my character would be considered mary sue, but she is more concerned with not using her overbearing strength to fight crime like others would. she just wants to support her little girl and do her job as a history teacher and live in a normal average place.
she only mary sues because someone else was dumb enough to start a fight with her which she ends in about 1 second.
its not a story about fighting, its about family, love and growth. also boobs, huge ones.
>>345068914
>mfw the first three apply to me
I'm just a neet, I swear. The rest don't apply to me, dammit!

>>345071872
Cool. I hope it offends him.
>>345071184
Oh I hear ya. I've got about 5 character flowcharts/outlines done. Each character has 16-ish different endings so I'm excited.
Good luck with the setting dude.
>>345070312
Kek
>>345071201
Sounds like my incredibly boring mangos
>have incredible god powers
>I just want to be normal and live an average life :^)
If you do it wrong like they do it will just come off as cringy and a chore to read.
Be careful.
What are some games that have actually good-written stories? I can only think of:
-Nier
-The Witcher games (particularly the Hearts of Stone expansion)
-Zero Escape games (which eventually go to shit because of muh plotwists)
-Planescape: Torment
-Bastion
-Persona 2
And... that's it.
>>345065071
Depends on the medium you are writing the character for.
If it's literature then theres a bunch of guides that could explain how to avoid it better then I could. I recommend just avoiding the cliche's if you want a character to be really strong, make them have to give something up to balance it out. Maybe they aren't great socially since they spent all their lives training, something like that.
If it is a game though things become more complex. As "levels of sueness" are different based on the genre
Commonly for rpg's or games with alot of character customization you can make them pretty much good at anything as it relies more on the players skills and stats. Although that is if they are the main character. Having player choice for their character also helps since being a self insert actually would make sense then and not make them feel like they are supposed to enjoy being someone else's character that is good at everything.
For games where you are playing an already established character, then you would need to follow the same rules as you would with literature, while maybe giving them enough power that player skill determines how strong they are, and they player doesn't feel tied down because they control a weak character surrounded by enemies that are way tougher then them.
