That being said, 2 hasn't aged that bad, and isn't as awful (visually) as 1.
But no, you don't have to play them. CDPR did a pretty good job at making everything comprehensible for newcomers.

Most important characters appear in the previous games so it's a lot easier to understand their relationship with Geralt

Neither 1 or 2 are necessary to the plot but the backstory helps. I'd say play 1 for the atmosphere and dialogue. but if it ain't doing it for you don't force it, the combat is bad and so are the controls.

I generally liked the first 2 but cant get into 3. I decided to put it off until later after its enhanced edition or whatever comes out but that seems to be about now times.
What can I do to care more about the intro? it just didnt interest me at all unlike 1 and 2. Maybe because its entirely focused on gerault right away where the others had much larger themes taking place in the first act.
Also hows performance on PC after all the patches? I tried at launch but it wasnt great.

You don't need to but I recommend TW2 at least because it has a drastic route split in the middle, something rarely seen in games lately.
Even for tw3, only the b&w expansion features something similar.
