I've come to the conclusion that as a whole, Awakening's supports and characters surpass all of Fates'. I don't really know what's missing.
For me, Awakening's supports were nice in the sense that I learned a lot more about the characters through their dialog. In Fates, I almost feel like all the characters were written into this one-track archetype and when conversations happen between two units it's simply those personalities glancing off of each other. Often it feels like one of the characters in the supports just happen to adjust to whichever the quirkier one is. Granted, I've never seen close to all of the supports in Fates since there are so many possibilities I suppose, and maybe it's hard to write scenarios to carry on with throughout each rank that fits both parties. But when I look back on Awakening I know plenty of supports that end up unraveling why a character is fighting, where they came from, or what they want to accomplish. For Fates, I almost feel like supports are just exhibitions for traits that are already introduced the first time the character speaks. It's very shallow depth.

I'm using /djt/'s guide, and I see them mentioning that learning the radicals may be a good option instead of directly grinding the kanji. Well Conquest is as you say a bit tougher, but still perfectly doable without any kids. That said Velouria is easily the best kid, followed by Ophelia and Soleil. Percy is also decent simply due to his class, but more importantly he can be gotten early and his chapter's gimmick allows you the opportunity to get a nice amount of gold. Hinoka pretty much grew up in paradise. The only issue she ever had growing up was that Corrin was kidnapped when she was young. Meanwhile the Nohr siblings sans Elise to an extent grew up in the shithole that is Nohr. So yeah, they are more likely to have a few more issues.
