I think it worked to their end fantastically to be honest. Personally speaking I revile and despise Nintendo for catering to mobile scum, and I haven't been able to like them since 2006 when they fucking went to cater to casual pants shitting crybabies. HOWEVER, their investment into this app has done exactly what they wanted it to, it's given Nintendo a HUGE spotlight in the entertainment/electronics medium.
Pokemon GO is INSAAAAAAAAAAAANELY popular, only matched in my memory to the scramble people made for the Wii. It's getting them lots of exposure as a company, making them relevant to normies which is what they needed. Their brand is in the spotlight, they need this for the NX and future software releases to be relevant again.
This is probably also why they're releasing the NES mini thing, to stimulate peoples nostalgia. It's all part of a greedy grand master plan, and I admire their manipulation as such. I hate modern Nintendo with a passion, as an older fan of theirs but this debacle is too fucking brilliant.
tl;dr any losses their incurring with this are irrelevant because it was an investment to gain them popularity again, and it's worked.
