Eh, most people I've talked to are excited for more to catch eventually. They don't care about gens and don't really care what most of them look like beyond "oh this one looks cute" or whatever.
Not like this game encourages you to level up your pokemon to keep around or use at all. Just another for the collection really.
I'm not mad about it at all, I just find it incredibly dull. I don't want to drive around my city just to play a game, and the things I find here anyway are the most boring of species, like Rattatas and Pidgeys and Zubats. The most interesting thing I've found so far is a single Scyther, but even that's lackluster at best. I've got too many other things I'm trying to play at the moment to worry about a game that's gated by time/real-world mobility.

Original had simplicity, minimalism, recognizably, and hearkened to simple animals/things/concepts without getting too specific.
The word "overdesigned" may be "overused," but it really applies here. Later designs (I'd say gen 3 and onward) lack all of the good things I mentioned about the above.

It's motivation to get my fat ass moving so it's worth it for that alone. Not to mention just meeting people that I otherwise wouldn't expect playing Pokemon.
It helps that after work (on a college campus) I can walk a quick half km route around campus to get like 10 pokestops for like 40-50 pokeballs and other stuff. The cafeteria has like three pokestops around it alone so a lot of people chill there with lures burning all day. I didn't realize pokestops refreshed so fast so I might just chill out by that cafeteria for a half hour after work.
