You really don't get how this works do you? The reason you shouldn't use unmodified retro hardware on HDTVs is because their cheap analogue to digital scaling hardware introduces lag. The new Nintendo shitbox outputs a digital signal by default and is thus the scaler doesn't come into the picture. That said there will probably still be some input lag given Nintendo's track record with these sorts of things.
I don't actually think the NES thing is worth buying either but damn should nobody have to suffer with those Atgames turds.

Even with the fucked up pitch, the sound coming out of the ATGames Genesis is more complex and advanced than the NES mini. The sound hardware it is emulating is an entire console generation ahead, it has vastly more functionality and lets you play your existing collection, and it's $10 cheaper. Anyone buying the NES mini is just doing it because the Nintendo name is slapped onto it, when products like this have been around forever and have had more to offer.
The scaling is just one piece of the puzzle. LCD displays have inherently higher input latency regardless of scaling and post-processing. The only modern displays comparable to CRTs in input latency are high-end TN monitors, and those don't offer the color accuracy or viewing angles that CRTs did. A CRT is dirt cheap these days, there's absolutely no excuse to be playing NES games on a laggy modern television.

At no point did I say CRT wasn't the superior choice, only that composite is pretty garbo when a real Genesis can do S-video with a simple mod or RGB out of the box.

Right, but you implied the reason modern displays have lag when playing older consoles is to do with the video signal and not the display itself, which is wrong. The 30 games on the NES mini will never be as responsive as the real thing, because it is impossible to play them on the type of display they were designed for.
