If you're new to SO, emulate the first two on PSP. If you like it, emulate SO3. If you like that one, play 5. SO5 is basically a love letter to SO3, so if you didn't like SO3, you probably won't like SO5.

Pretty awful. The game itself was not made for grinding at mid levels, yet you can absolutely break the game by leveling specific roles and getting specific talents from Welch at key points in the game.
An unfinished title that clearly had a small budget what otherwise would have been a good game.
Also needed a function to skip the "immersive" cutscenes.

Constantly one of the most purchased pre-orders on Amazon. Constantly hit #1 in sales. Yet everyone agrees that even for a 20-25 hour game, it drags on for far too long.
I don't. I came to terms with the fact that Star Ocean 2 was just a fluke that doesn't even hold up that well today a long time ago.
Having fun and I honestly think it'scute.

However, early game is boring when you only have one attack skill and few roles to play with.
And they withhold fast travel for far too long. Should have it unlocked as soon as you visit every region.

Very good panty game. I like it.
I enjoyed it until halfway through the postgame dungeon. Then the games battle system flaws really show. Beat Ethereal Queen and put the game away til it has a chance of scratching a genre itch again. Still got a good 45 hours out of it. Savor panning around the camera to get angles on Fiore, it really helps time pass when you have to backtrack for the tenth time.

It's ok, a decent 6 or 7. My main issues are that the combat isn't as smooth as SO3, 7 person battles dissolve into clusterfucks at times, and there's little space exploration/travel. The characters are interesting, and I liked the story. The environments look great, but some of the characters look bad at times (mostly Potato-Chan). Post-game was also awful - only 1 dungeon with no map to artificially inflate time spent in the dungeon, not to mention that EQ/Gabe break down into "use DMW on Miki or a DPS or get fucked".
On the whole it could've been great, but either budget/time limitations or design decisions crippled it.

It's ok. I'm a bit disappointed with how small the world is. You spend too much time backtracking to old areas. I liked the optional dungeon with the super bosses.
The camera needs a serious patch or something
