That's a reaching comparison. Anyways, Dante has cocky energy driving his violence: he's having as much fun as the player is/should be having, and he has enough vulnerability to drop his act and get serious if need be. There's a reason nobody liked DMC2 Dante: he was joyless.
Shadow doesn't have an act. He's as serious as he seems on the surface, and his characterization is inconsistent at best. His apathetic running through whatever is in front of him (especially in Shadow's own game) removes the player from the experience and saps them from the fun they should be having, barring the horrible pop-in, terrible missions, and boring combat.

Yes.
Because DMC was literally founded on the concept of having a dreadful, miserable world filled with demons; but with Dante as a joyful contrast.
Despite the fact that Dante is half demon he serves as a beacon of hope in a world were no angels or god exists.
It's cheesy but heartwarming and makes for an interesting theme, setting and protag.
I think /v/ gives Capcom way too much credit when it comes to writing Dante's character. He's amusing and fun to play as, but he and his story is a mess in every single game. He's a poorly written character, just like his games.

Yes.
What did you expect? Did you play as Vergil as DMC3:SE? He just went through Dante's exact campaign. They had a year to add in 3 new characters for DMC4. Did you really expect 2 brand new campaigns? Almost all Japanese action games rehash the fuck out of their levels. The Sam and Bladewolf DLC missions were just remixed levels from Raiden's mission, except Bladeworld got a brand new bossfight.
Japanese action games typically have shitty level design but amazing combat systems. The combat is the main appeal and focus of these games.

Shadow is a completely moody piece of shit who doesn't smile and doesn't have fun the whole game. He also murders people for shits and giggles depending on what route you're doing.
Dante is a pretty fun guy who taunts his enemies and enjoys a good fight. It's really only in 1 and 2 that he's even remotely depressed and even then he still focuses on killing demons instead of shooting random police like Shadow.

DMC4 Dante is a goofy showoff but DMC3 Dante had actual character flaws. He failed to reconcile with his brother and tried to keep a cocky attitude despite this leading to his brother's death. He learned to take things more seriously going by canon (DMC1) but that was taken out in DMC4. I personally prefer goofy Dante though.

The acting is DMC3&4 is so strong and consistent, goddamn. Ninja Theory shits on the older games for being "too anime", but the portrayals of Donte and Vorgil are so weak outside of the edgy, cringe scenes. Donte doesn't have a consistent attitude or personaility. After a FUCK YOU scene he goes back to being a mopey, boring kid. Vorgil has such a weak and boring personality and voice performance compared to classic Vergil. Vergil acts so consistent in DMC3 and all of his line are delivered in an intimidating way. They were super intimidating the first time around. Vergil 1 is really easy on repeat playthroughs. Using DT almost feels like cheating. Vergil 2 isn't so bad when you figure out what to do. Vergil 3 is still brutal, and when I replay that mission, I still can't beat him consistently. Vergil 3 can trap you in a combo and take a third of your life away, spends a shitload of time in DT getting health regen, and near the ends fills the screen with Judgment Cuts and chases you down with Helmbreakers.
