It's cool to see it return. Hopefully in a more functional manner, as many of the dungeons in Daggerfall were straight up impossible to solve.

Had they thought of it as more than a tech demo, they could have released it as a full game on a 3½-inch.

>>
>>344995961
Copying and sharing materials with floppies was super comfy, but it was a volatile storage medium. If it rubbed the wrong way in your pocket or got too close to something magnetized, you could say goodbye to your files. That's why I and many more thought Zip drives were the future, the same comfy but on a much better storage medium.
And flash drives for that matter, why the fuck aren't media and video game publishers driving down the cost of those and using them in lieu of optical media?
>>
>>344996368
Digital distribution is a much cheaper medium with less possible logistical problems.

I'm more impressed by the original Elite.

52 Kbytes of disk size (on tape casette) and only 16kB RAM to work with for the BBC Micro - and with procedural generation wizardry the devs managed to write a full 3D space game with 2048 planets (the original planned for 2^48, and the code was capable of generating these unique planets - but the publisher wanted to make the game more manageable and "believable" to consumers by implementing fewer planets) in 1984.
>>
>>344996657
It's also a more expensive headache to maintain, with majority of console and handheld gamers still buying their games physically.
Media sizes are also increasing, while internet service aren't necessarily meting more bandwidth demands globally, so a good selling point for a 50+ GB game is to own it on a physical medium that can handle that storage without you also having to foot the bill for the download cost.
>>
>>344990841

Using floppies was definitely comfy.

In high school, back in the Game Maker 5 days, I used to create games, and I specifically challenged myself to try to make them be able to fit on floppy disks - so that I could bring them in and easily play them at school.

I could burn CDs, too, but that didn't have the same appeal, for some reason. I mostly saw it as a dev challenge.
>>
>>344990841

It's simple, my little anon.
They care about gameplay over aesthetics, the anti-thesis of Star Citizen(or some say Scam Citizen).
>>
>>344997576
>>344992389
Why can't devs optimize for filesize anymore? I know storage is so cheap nowadays, but I miss the days of dealing with compact, easy-to-download, easy-to-transfer files.

Fucking indie Unity games are 100MB minimum. Fuck this shit.

When this game is released there are going to be visitors from the future.

On August 9th, 2016 three humans from the future will arrive in Times Square. They will claim to be from the 67th century but really they are from a time far past that.

They will explain that since this masterpiece of a game was released no single human has been able to beat it. Not billions, TRILLIONS of worlds have been discovered in-game and the developers have left little clues leading towards technological advancements in the real world!

No Man's Sky is more than just a game. It is the single greatest and most important piece of technology to ever be made. Preorder now.

All the data is stored online as it's made and streamed to you.

Good luck playing in 10 years.
>>
If anyone wants an actual answer, the game is rendered using a sequence (or algorithm) which is generated endlessly. The sequence is the same for every single player, so there are no differences.

So, none of the game world is saved in the game files, its just a big number that the game reads and displays shit accordingly.

I wouldn't advise pre-ordering this one.

(i used this desktop every day until about '07)

i got really into computers, eventually found a home on irc#freenode, then somehow got ropped into the demoscene by a friend.

i may or may not have been an asshole loading demos on floppes and telling other kids in class "i created them"

i was just beyond fucking impress i could load an entire music video in less space than a single wav file.

>tfw i also got into the PSP modding scene
>step dad wouldnt let me use the internet
>got on anyway anytime i could when they were not home
>discovered the magic of mother fucking winrar

somwhere at my moms house is a fuxking box of about 200 FLOPPIES i used to transport SOCOM from the parents computer to mine, had to strip all the videos and single player maps from the ISO so i didnt need to use 800 floppies.

then i realized the next week i could have just drug my desktop downstairs to download it
