Probably Jak & Daxter, I can't remember a game world that was as legitimately comforting and immersive to just wander around and do missions in. Maybe it's the simple open-world game feel that does it, but you can tell they really poured their hearts and souls into creating the setting, story and characters

Only other thing that's ever come close to matching that Final Fantasy VII/VIII/XI level of immersion for me

Persona 3 or 4.

I got into the series way after they were released so I always knew the jokes and spoilers that went around. When I finally got around to playing them and realizing how much I enjoyed them I had already known too much. It was hardly the same experience knowing who dies in P3, who the killer is in P4, knowing all the characters, or knowing all the music.

If I could go through either completely fresh that'd be amazing.

That or Hotline Miami. Goddamn that shit blew me away the first time through. I'd love to have that adrenaline filled experience again.
>>
>>344998454
You basically get this sense of being part of something big. You're never given the "master chief" role, you're not saving the world alone / universe alone. You basically play as a team member with squad of AI pilots. You're not the "hero".

I'm playing P3 for the first time right now and I have to agree with you.
Knowing pretty much every twist and turn and the music etc, kind of ruins it, I mean, I'm still enjoying it alot but I think if I had the possibility to play it ''blind'' I would have loved it even more.
Also, playing on an emulator sucks, I often change between original resolution and 1080p and between widescreen and 4:3.
>tfw you'll never experience Persona 3 without any previous knowledge on a proper tv and ps2

maybe the new Cod will become freespace 3 based on your definition
most space games involve you being a little nobody anyway, since TIE fighter and the like, literally not a new things. There's a reason why people play Ace Combat. You start from nobody until you become a living legend and the enemies freak the fuck out when they see you
