Setting up complicated maneuvers with an AI team is the coolest shit and you just don't get anything like that anymore.

What pisses me off is how this style of gameplay got abandoned before it could be perfected.

I would say that it would lie somewhere between Raven Shield and Insurgency. Insurgency is nice but it's too snappy and arcadey, it needs to be slowed down a lot, you need to have that sense of weight of the chest rig on you and your gun. Raven Shield simulates this perfectly with different level of armor, but it needs ADS and way, way, waaaay better programmed AI, especially squadmate AI for breaching.
>>
>>344980257
I was never good enough to plan my own raids, I just took the planned routes as a team lead.
>>
>>344985356
Gameplay was taken by Breach and Clear and Door Kickers who took the tactical map planning and made it into a game. It never developed into a proper 3d game unfortunately, and since Breach and Clear crawled up it's own ass and went with a zombie focused second game that feels like more of a parody and Door Kickers seems to be happy running on a multitude of fan maps I'm not sure anyone will develop them further.
>>
>>344986050
Planning segment was just far too restricting and it didn't allow you to do anything creative. You had only a few synchronization points available, plus your teammate AI was far too dumb.

>order the niggas to stack up, open, flash and clear
>they stack up
>first in the stack stands literally right in front of the door
>opens the door
>only then proceeds to slowly switch to a flashbang
>starts getting shot to shit without even tossing the damn thing inside
>finally tosses it
>proceeds to switch to his primary for the following 3 seconds, while praying to god he has heavy armor on
>only then the team starts going in
>>
>>344985669
I'm not interested in the realistic weapon handling part so much as I'm interested in the tactical planning part.

It drives me crazy that the only other game to try something like R6's planning phase is a Gundam game of all things. (See pic related)

You have strategy games, but it's not quite the same when you aren't actually one of the guys on the ground.
>>
>>344986813
Even so, it still did realistic weapon handling, at least to a higher degree than games even a decade later do. If you get wounded your aim goes to shit, permanently. Also, ingame selection of weapons was downright mind-boggling back in the day, and it still has more variety than most games do today. I also liked how silencers/other attachments affected different ratings of a weapon. And there was also the mini-rpg element to it, if you used the same operators through the missions their stats would go up. Pretty fucking neat.

As far as tactical planning goes, it would be nice if a game would go really balls deep into the matter, teaching you about different sectors/quadrants when breaching etc. That way planning would be important because you would have to assign team members to different shit, but it would also come down to you executing your own portion because otherwise either you or one of your team mates could get fucked up. I just want everything to be manual, no "press E to dynamic entry", I want to manually open the door with the selective speed (super slow mousewheel, medium speed, full on door kicking etc) and to manually do everything else.

Surely there is a demand for something like this.
>>
>>344986523
I have to say a lot of missions felt like there was one way to do things, and if you deviated from that it was done to pure luck if it would work so if you breach in a well orchestrated attack you could still fail because unlike the way the AI was programmed for the set path they could do something stupid, or anticipate an action that should have been out of their range.

Still better than the N64 version of Rainbow 6 which was a shooter but still pretented it was R6. All body armor was the same speed and protection wise, no inventory bar the grenades worked, you had auto-map on so you saw where everyone was, no environmental hazards in any level, so instead of a "you die" if you get hit in the bio-hazard levels you can go in with no hazmat suits/heavy armour and walk out just fine, you could blow a door with a grenade if you had to instead of running into a door and having to quit.
>>
>>344987571
PS1 also had its ports of RS1 and Rogue Spear. Also, the exclusive Rainbow game called Lone Wolf.
Odd thing is that PS1 version of RS1 actually had first person weapon models so that was cool as fuck back in the day. All horrible games by any objective merits obviously, but I remember having some fun with Rogue Spear split screen multi.

PS1 in general had its fair share of early tactical shooter games. There were shitton of Spec Ops games which were retardedly difficult but back then they were more /k/ than anything available, exclusive Delta Force Urban Warrior (or Urban Warfare?) game, also depending if you count it but Syphon Filter series were awesome.
>>
>>344987339
Unfortunately single player tactical shooters are in the weird limbo where they're too complicated for the AAA audience but also too expensive for indie devs to take a crack at.
>>

Still need to play the Rainbow Six games. I bought them on a sale but never got around to playing them.

Playing SWAT 3 at the moment though. And SWAT 4 kind of but I like 3 better.

Though for the people saying nobody wants to talk about these kinds of games, it's because the genre is basically dead, like stealth. There are a few indie games doing similar things but there aren't too many tactical shooters coming out.

Someone posted about an upcoming game called Due Process which looks pretty cool though. It's multiplayer only though, I want more single player games.

The worrying part is that nobody is really capable of making them anymore.

Like look at Brothers in Arms. Would you really trust Gearbox to make another one?

Well, technically, as far as I know, that's what the 'trailers' would do in a situation like this, as well as clean out dead bodies.

Naturally it wouldn't work like that in real life as the hostages would be the number one priority. But they did what they could with the technology at the time. The likes of which I doubt we'll ever see again.
>>
>>345001912
Breaching charges actually stun enemies like flashbangs do, and they're super good at drawing aggro so I wouldn't call them impractical.

The AI is much better at using them then they are at using flashbangs to breach, plus it's neat to use go-codes and have a stun on demand.

I actually like SWAT4 more, sure it's slower, but you've got rules to follow, unless you're a scrub playing on easy mode.

This means you'll have to use your tools, rather than what RainbowSix does, which is kill every motherfucker in sight. And I don't mean that as a bad thing, they're just different. RainbowSix is what happens after negotiations fail, they're the cleanup crew. While SWAT has rules and protocols to follow.

I still play Hidden and Dangerous 2 with my father in co-op, such a fun fucking game. Same goes for Raven Shield and SWAT 4. I hate the "ADHD generation" meme, but something went wrong with Western gamers at some point (I recently stumbled upon a comment on a 7.62 HC walkthrough video, made by a Russian no less, calling the YouTuber a "retarded Westerner" for not being able to clear NATO base level).
>>

I just prefer the role of SOF-type unit over assaulting a small restaurant against a few thugs with Uzis. Also SWAT4 does some things that just don't gel with me:

>cramped environments
Yes I know about CQB but there is something just wrong with world scaling in S4.
>shitty gunplay, shitty recoil, shitty weapon selection
Most emphasis on recoil, guns feel like you handled a minigun to a fucking infant. Inexcusable.
>game is too easy to cheese
Just abuse paintball gun.
>enemy AI doesn't react to you yelling SWAT! 90% of time
You can claim this is realistic but factually it renders the main gimmick that game offers sort of obsolete. And then the game penalizes you for "abusing" the suspects.

>game is too easy to cheese
Fair enough, but I disagree with the AI not reacting to the yelling. You just have to 'persuade' them into submission, aka pepper spray, flashbangs, smoke grenades, taser, etc.

The game ain't perfect, but if you just play it straight and don't abuse a very, very old game that did something no other game has ever done, then you're in for a good time. Especially if you learn to effectively command your team/use snipers.

It's kind of disingenuous for people to keep qualifying what they're saying by adding western to it considering the kinds of games popular in Japan. The entire games scene is messed up and Japan is no exception. Even Russia which you used in your example eats up F2P garbage left and right even if there's a minority that plays tactical games, which is true of the US as well.
>>
>>345004687
I did.

>>345005213
Indeed. The Kickstarter was to assure an investor because publishers didn't want to back up a tactical shooter. The investor bailed out soon after successful funding. They managed to get a publisher but things had to be scaled down and schedule got tight. Many other problems as well due to poor choices and luck such as audio library locking them to certain UE version.
