It's an experiment in aRPGs that mostly pays off.
By speeding everything up, making stamina a non-issue (stamina bars are cancer for action games but that's a discussion for another day), giving you two effective item bars and healing its own dedicated button, Bloodborne concentrates, and succeeds, on keeping you in the action for extended periods of time.
A far departure from Dark/Demon's Souls almost stop n start nature. It almost gets to Ys levels.
The only part where it really falls apart - and it falls apart HARD - are the Chalice dungeons. Empty, monotonous clusterfucks that occasionally make up for design by just spamming rooms full of enemies - and containing weapon upgrades that completely break the PvP - Chalice Dungeons represent both everything wrong with Bloodborne and serve as a nifty example of everything wrong with current action-roguelike procgen. There's no real understating how bad they are, and they only get worse the more you play.
Other than that it's fun, probably my favourite game of Fromsoftware's library and easily worth renting a PS4 for.

BB is unquestionably the strongest souls game, in terms of pve.
It's got the deepest melee combat system in the series, with every weapon being fun, having a varied moveset, and multiple build options
It's got some of the best bosses in the series.
It's got BY FAR the best setting, the best "story," and the best lore in the series, so if you're into paying attention the lore, BB will be your favorite out of all the games.
The only thing BB doesn't have much in the way of is magic, which is no fun in the first place.
PVP connectivity is janky and requires grinding to be viable, but the pvp itself, when you actually start fighting other people, is the best in the series.
