After it's immense success, everyone went ahead and copied what it did, and then copied whatever the later Call of Duty games did. This led to the saturation of FPS games, and now they're all fucking shit.
It killed the genre by being a good game.

Especially when you consider the buzz surrounding it due to the infamous "airport scene".
Video games had been in the public eye for some time, but this was one of those rare times where moral outcry had the opposite effect and boosted the popularity.
It was the first cloud of shit in the perfect storm that is the modern industry.
Id like to think MW2 played a big part in the real cause of decline in the industry: the indie market. Because things started getting so formulaic, smaller markets started to form. At first it was harmless. After all, people had been making flash games for years, simply out of love for the craft. But as the market grew, greed and corruption ruled.
