It's better to have a well-written pre-made character where you can make decisions that are reasonable to that character than a mary sue OC.
Same goes with most of the D&D games I've played. The games I've played with pre-made scenarios/character sheets were way more fun/consistent than ones where people do whatever they want and break character every two seconds because they can't decide what they want.
