Its not bad, it grew me on me over the years. I actually liked the story, and I thought it was fun when you figured out how to abuse the shit out of the junction system. Graphics and sound are also way better than FFVII.
Graphics
Xenogears is a good example of why JRPGs will never have an actual good story. Weebs slurp up Xenogears and Chrono Trigger for the atmosphere, characters, setting and music but the stories are incredibly cliched or sub-par, yet weebs consider them masterpieces. If you look at Xenogears story it would be on par with a child's book, yet weebs insist that it is a masterpiece. Clearly these same people have stopped reading since they finished high school as the narratives in this game are executed poorly, and will never touch a medium similar to the story telling of a book or movie. Aside from the story, the gameplay is garbage, just like any other JRPG.

They basically ran out of money and had to cut a ton of content hence the story rush and complete lack of world map till the end. You never even got to use Elly's omnigear. One of my biggest gripes was combat outside of gears was pretty much removed completely after Disc 1 with most dungeons including the final being all in gears.

You forget one MAJOR flaw in that Rinoa = Ultimacia theory:
Ultimacia exists some hundred years or so in the future. Becoming a Sorceress does NOT bestow an extended life, it simply grants power. The "One Sorceress every generation" does not mean one every hundred years, it means one every 20-30 years - the length of a generation. As for Griever, Ultimacia directly takes that image from Squall before the battle starts, she didn't have it on her beforehand. And he's got TONS of lion motifs on him besides that ring.
Now, could Ultimacia be Rinoa's descendant? That's possible, but it's impossible for them to be one and the same while staying true to game canon.

I agree, the game was pretty "meh" tier to me. Felt like I was reading cutscenes more than actually playing the game which I don't mind too much but the story just felt like your average 90's mecha anime. Nothing really stood out about the game to me. Maybe if I had played this game around the time it came out I'd probably would of loved it like everyone else but it's just plain to me now.

Hammer especially- in Disc 2 Fei straight up lies when he starts talking about how Hammer gave this super important speech when in reality it never happened.
Characters are introduced then quickly shoved off screen and the only twists I think had any impact that I can recall was Fei being ID and the whole being reborn ordeal but at that point the writing was so off the walls it was hard to keep track of what was actually supposed to be happening.

disc 1 is phoenominal. You can see they took time the explore their themes, Atheism, basic psychology,sexuality,prejudice,child abuse,decide, drug addiction, and fuck ton of stuff that was extremely sensitive subjects in ultra religious USA.

Yeah, FF7, Xenogears and CT all share a common space parasite/god like being theme and some other threads like someone controlling that being for their own purposes, but they all go on their different ways of developing it. Xenogears is more existential and piles on the religious themes and it works great there, while FF7 as gritty and modern as it wanted to be still retains some of its classic magical themes and CT is closer to the DQ formula with some FF elements. Too bad they later copy pasted Xenogears' existentialism on Chrono Cross when it wasn't needed and felt out of place.
