Ephemeral nodes aren't based on weather. They're time-based just like unspoiled nodes, and at any time of day there's always at least 1 mining and 1 botany ephemeral node up. It just means you're forced to move around a lot.
The biggest bullshit is that to actually get decent aethersand you are basically relying on 30% chance procs from Impulsive Appraisal, otherwise you can't get the purity high enough due to durr perception caps.

if you're a raider, you're mostly past the gates. some items need currency in order to upgrade, but you can get a pretty gnarly set of gear from it without needing to wait weeks.
if you want raid level gear without raiding, thats when the gates hit. 450 lore tomes a week, need 1000 for a weapon, 1 midan gear a week (need 7) to get a weapon. yes you need both. minmaxing your shit will require a decent amount of Gil investment too with materia
what this creates is a casual base thats not terribly underperforming, at least in theory, to the raiders, but the raiders are still a head above them.

I tried to use a controller but that shit isn't intuitive at all, and Macro codes are too simple to create a proper "combo" hotkey (like "press hotkey to use [skill] and change the skill on that hotkey to [skill 2], then [skill 3] and back to [skill 1]", there is a code for it but it is too simple and limited, and latency will fuck you up harder than trying to use ninjitsu with +100 ping).

Basically like playing an Elder Scrolls game. I'd say the leveling is the best part of the game honestly.
Quests are generally pretty well written and each zone's main quest line is usually separate from the handful of "go here kill 5 things for me thanks" each zone has.
Crafting/gathering is useful as you level too and it's probably the first time I've seen that in an MMO. Crafted gear from the start is as good or better than things you'll be finding at that level.
There's public dungeons and WvWvW PVP starting at level 10 too but the vast majority of your time leveling is going to be playing an MMOified Elder Scrolls game other people happen to be in.

And newbies don't like being rushed through the climax of ARR. Getting there with all the fetch quests is annoying; don't undermine all that buildup.
They should really convert just convert the whole thing (Castrum+Praetorium) into a solo-instance like the Aetherchemical Research Facility, where you're chasing after Hydrus.
Add a bunch of high-ranking Storm/Flames/Serpent NPCs (and the Scions, I can't remember whether or not they were busy in the story) in place of friendly players and tweak the fights to work.

It's easy to have an enjoyable experience with CM/Praetorium, but sadly there's no way for new players to know how.
Just get as many fellow new players as possible, then get ONE level 60 player to help out. No need for a full party.
Also, soloing the dungeons is pretty fun. I soloed both as SMN back in 3.0, at ilvl 160. Was pretty fucking challenging.
