What is /v/'s opinion on Resident Evil 4?
Decent game in its own right, but it was the end of RE as a horror series.
Not the godsend that everyone claims. It was the originator of the gameplay that people shit on 5 for having, which infuriates me.
RE4 is not Survival Horror by any stretch. It's Horror Action, which RE5 did better in all respects from gunplay to partner system to monster design.

no I don't. RE4 was great. If they had made 5 and 6 to be just as good or better, things would be fine. They took the worst aspects of RE4 (linearity, qtes, terrible story) and focused on it, then added forced coop to the mix. Not to mention the coop is terribly implemented, instead of just having a normal campaign and then adding an extra player on coop (perhaps making thins harder to compensate) they make the entire game around coop, including level length, leading to short as fuck chapters and constant "you cannot go back" barriers.

Pros:
-Still the best third person shooting mechanics I've seen in a game.
-Best looking GC game
-Red9 is my favorite gun from a video game and I loved that I could use is for 90% of the game
-Good sense of freedom despite having 'zoned' areas
-Voice acting didn't make my ears bleed
-Boss fights actually had some variety

-Story is rather cheesy despite trying to be more serious than other RE games

In all, I'd say its one of the top 3 GC games and would play it again just for the gameplay.

Its a great game. The level design was also good and honestly i felt like the village areas until you get Ashley were survival horror enough but after that its just action. The only faults i have with it were my dislike of QTEs but hey atleast they didn't suck as bad as in other games.
Its also not too hard but because of movement forces decent effort on the player. It has lasting power because its not bad graphically and its graphics are a very polished basic format so they probably won't ever look notably bad.
Its a very classic game at this point.

Only if you play on normal, there's a scaling system that makes ennemies more resistant more reactive an hit harder if you play well and the opposite if you get hit, die or miss your shots, in professional it's always at max and that's it.

RE4 saved RE.
After playing the game at a friend's house years ago I bought the Wii port which uses the remote for lightgun aiming and takes out a significant amount of the challenge, but the game is still really fun that way.
RE5 gets a lot of hate for further stripping the survival elements but from an action standpoint I think it's about equal or greater than 4.
I hope they actually add something to the PS4 version of RE4 to get me to buy it again for the 3rd time. The ability to strafe or new costumes or some shit, anything that isn't a lazy PC port.

RE5 is by no means a notably bad game. Its a lackless experience like a 6/10 but its only improvement over RE4 was the gunplay which isn't a big enough gap to put it anywhere near as good as RE4.

I honestly never saw a point. There are only like 2 regenerators in the entire game you have to kill to escape of the rooms of and shotgun blasts are enough to power through that without much of a ammo loss. Most areas are build for mid range combos so the shotgun/machine guns are fine. I just use that room for more healing grenades and magnums.

the only way to be faithful to the original is to play the original. in every subsequent release starting with the PS2 version some of the weapon damage stats were buffed to make the game a little easier. significantly in some cases, like with the wooden rifle for example, it got a buff of 15 damage points.

Yeah I never understood why some people prefer the riot gun. The striker deals more damage, has a faster reload time, and has a larger ammo capacity. The only downside is that it has a slightly smaller range compared to the other shotguns. A handicap that can be dealt with by taking two steps forward.

To be honest, you should be using the TMP at that point anyways. The way I see it, just keep the pistol as a lower priority weapon/upgrade but be using your TMP which is given ammo like candy and also gets more per drop.

It's very good, it has slightly less damage than the default pistol/Red 9 (TMP has 1.8 with its Exclusive, 2.0 and 5.0 exclusive for pistols respectively), but it also gets 5x the ammo per drop (10 compared to 50).
Was easy compared to earlier ones even on professional it's a matter of knowing the game mechanics and not tangible death around every corner.
Still loved it though, mercs was fun as shit and I SS'd all of them but wesker had the best payload.

Yeah. I really hated CV, the amount of backtracking bordered on self-parody, the first obstacle in the game makes you run across the entire world up to that point three times. Health and ammo was shoved down your throat to the point that the "survival" part of the "survival horror" was more a polite suggestion (though you could argue that started with 3, or even 2). The second half was mostly slightly altered rooms from the first half, even making you fetch some of the same items you fetched in the first half again. Then there's Steve.
They had ran out of ideas for the old formula by that point, to the point that being able to aim at two enemies at once with dual guns was probably the biggest new feature. Other than ugly polygonal backgrounds replacing prerendered ones.
Resident Evil needed an enema by that point. I wouldn't really call RE4 survival horror either, but it's at least a damn good action horror game.

It's really good. Ammo is not unusual, but you have to own the gun to find any. It works great to handle crowds and shields. It also trivializes the fight with Saddler, if you choose.

The game has a way of giving you ammo depending on how much of it you have, with it rolling randomly on ammo types for weapons you have but holding back on special weapons if you have a lot of it.

I'd recommend grabbing it asap, and doing free ammo capacity upgrade refill shenanigans whenever you get the chance. The scope and homing upgrades aren't really worth it if you can aim worth shit. Dunno bout professional since I just recently finally tried it in a new game on RE4HD, but iirc two direct dart hits on a Garrador's back plaga kills them as an example of its power. It also trivializes all the shield squads in the castle.
Ammo is also nice since it feels more common than magnum
