mostly the same, i used a few just because they were well above their parents in terms of growth/start stats. But they were just simply pointless to whatever plot this game had, awakening had some excuse for the child chars, they were just implemented porrly, fates had no reason for them, but they were mechanically implemented well. Level scaling/offspring seals were a fantastic idea that i wish had been awakening
There's really no point to distinct typing when everybody can use any type, and the statistical difference is trivial(and restricting it by element is retarded anyway).
It also ties into the better rebalancing that comes about as a result of eliminating weapon usage. Things that perform effective damage have to be restricted in some way.
Honestly, the only real issue is just the same thing that plagued mages in PoR/RD. Mages just don't grow that well compared to other specialized units, bows are buffed much better, and the wholesale utility of magic isn't too hot. Not to mention the addition of much more physical weapons that can attack at 1-2 range like the hidden weapons and many bows.
Honestly, all mages would really need is better magic stat growth across the board, and maybe some skill and speed to at least keep up with other midrange classes like paladin or hero, and they'll fit their niches properly.

Not really. There were a lot of useless/bad characters throughout the game that had at least some uses because of the way availability worked. It just so happened they threw a bunch of broken laguz at you for the final part. I think it was balanced by forcing you to take a bunch of garbage characters, but I never used the royals and was fine in RD. You just need units that hit the magic number.

Awakening and Fates have the custom character, the other games just star Chrom-likes as the MC.
They have supports, but they're much more limited - usually restricted to 5 supports per character (that means getting to A with one character, then to B with another). No marriage or children, not a single support turns outright romantic.
There are many characters better written and more engaging than the schlock found in Awakening.

I don't think FE7's supports really gave them more depth, it's just that Awakening had far more supports. It's easy to feel that way when you aren't over-saturated with a higher volume of shitty ones.
Think of it this way. Pick the five best supports for each Awakening/Fates character and remove all of the others. Like I said, FE7 had some gems but after having gone back and played it early this year it came to me that a large portion of the cast really isn't that special. Sacred Stones and Tellius were much better there.

Well again, it's not so much a question of being 'dumped down' as it is of volume. Looking at Awakening's and Fates' supports, it's obvious that some had more effort put into them than others. Just look at Cherche's supports for example. I get the idea that a lot of supports were just written to fill the quota.
Of course that's talking about the characters and supports. No denying that Awakening and Fates fucked up on the story front, though granted Awakening wasn't the first.

Thats still in a way dumbing it down, in that its now bloated with more badly, hastily written supports, that cover up the ones that are actually good. And honestly, awakenings plot wasnt even "terrible" by FE standards, it was just rushed towards the middle in my opinion, fates is what dropped the bar to a new low to me, both in plot and in adding extra content just because via the childern.
Its just sloppy writing for the sake of getting more sales, and thats always a slippery slope. Now granted, the kids were better implemented mechanically compared to awakenings, they still had no reason to exist at all.

4 is jarring if youve only played post 7 FE. It's a very slow game, maps are huge, while movement is small, even mounted units take awhile to get where thy need to. But otherwise its a pretty solid game and is a good example on how you do child mechanics

6 is rough around the edges and has more characters than you know what to do with (though a good few of them are quite uninteresting).
7 is well-rounded and a pleasant experience throughout, with only a handful of shitty maps like the retarded pirate gaiden.
8 is my personal favorite, though I can understand why people dislike it. It's got the best story/characters of the three and some stellar fucking moments and levels. Even if balance is a bit janky compared to its predecessor it's not nearly as bad as people say (assuming you don't grind, which you shouldn't in any FE game).

7's characters had more unique backstories, although Heath, Renault, and Vaida were interesting there were also nothing characters like Erk, whereas with 8 even Neimi and Amelia had backstories, also the supports acted like the other supports had already happened like Amelia asking Duessel to help her beat Franz, don't get me wrong, I like 7 more but that's part of why people like 8

What solid supports were there in SS? I honestly don't remember, it's been a long time since I've played that game. The only one I can remember being interesting was Ephraim/Dussel.
The characters weren't really bad per se, but I liked finding out the various relations in 7. The supports were the way of giving a story to the characters, and you ended up getting their personalities as well.
Plot was generic for a JRPG but admittedly different for Fire Emblem (fighting monsters instead of humans, not having a dragon as the last boss).
