Because they've made a game around the gimmick. Created a system for procedurally generated galaxy first and only then started to think about what the fuck player will do in the game besides walking and flying, the gameplay. And all they came up with is your generic Skinner box shit you can do in any other game: you collect resources to get better gear which you only need to get more resourced to get better gear. It's a waste of time, money and effort all thanks to poor gamedesign

No Man's Sky is exactly like Elite Dangerous, promises amazing things and is instead extremely mediocre and has shallow gameplay. We already have a precedent for how shit this game is going to be.

ED was definitely a letdown. I'm not super casual, but I didn't have the special kind of autism required to enjoy that game. It needed a bit more structure than it had.
That said, the travel system was great, and felt great. Screaming around at terrifying speed in a system, and spooling up for a hyperjump were both very satisfying.
