Yeah it's pretty great. NPC and story are good. You can make techno shit with rifles and tesla armor, aside from classic skills. Too bad music fucking sucks in this game and always made me fall asleep. Oh and female portraits are hideous.

It's pretty good. World is basically magic vs tech. Played through a couple times.
Last I played there was still a very dedicated community for patching/modding.

Anyone else had massive issues running Arcanum on a modern system? I had horrible slowdown, long loading screens and once I was in the game everything was sped-up

I've had some huge problems with running old games on my laptop. It's fairly cheap but it's modern yet I get bad framerate in Diablo 2, Tiberian Sun and all sorts of shit like that
I'm trying to play icewind dale and baldur's gate and i don't know shit about DnD and I don't the the games has a manual for those shit

Read the manual
For your first time, pick a charismatic melee fighter without too deep tech or magic affinity. Learn how skill trainers work. The first NPC is a healer, and he'll make comments about the main quest, just keep him.
Almost all stats grant a humongous bonus when you raise them to 20. Str: melee damage Dex: Speed etc. With max dex and str, and some melee skill, even a fucking toothpick becomes the deadliest weapon.
If you pick a background/race combo that leaves a stat under 8, you can't raise it to 20.
There's a chance to become evil but it's super over the top and childish.

Just play them.
Knowing the DnD rules helps to understand stuff like how the damage is calculated but it really isn't necessary.

First levels can be annoying because some of your characters will die in one hit and mages are not that strong yet.
Let the paladin tank your enemies. If needed, get the berserker to cover.
Get ranged weapons for the other characters (slingshots/throwing darts for mages) and let them sit in the back.
If you can't beat a group of enemies, rest to fully heal everybody.

I must've savescummed like 60 times, and the few times that I've managed to kill all of them , I barely survived and both my companies died.
Are guns really that bad later on?
Anyway, OP, it's a damn solid game, although the game is slightly rushed / unfinished towards the end.

Guns are okay if you REALLY take the time to upgrade them, if anything they suck early game. There's a peaceful resolution but I agree that the paladins are sort of bullshit.
