Were we too harsh on this game?
>>
Yes, but only a little. It's still kinda bad, just not absolutely terrible.
>>
>>344864860
It's the DmC of castlevania.
>>
I downloaded the demo, liked what I saw in the first 5 minutes, the a big dog monster came out and the fight turned into a QTE halfway through. And that's when I uninstalled. Shame, because aesthetics and atmosphere were stellar.
>>
>>344864860
I little, it wasn't a bad game, just mediocre.

The sequel however deserve all the hate it gets.
>>
>>344864860
I would say so. It's derivative and somewhat mediocre, but that's all it is. Nothing more to it than that. It certainly isn't responsible for the "death" of Castlevania.

It isn't even that far removed from the series roots. It's not as if it's any less "Castlevania" (using the original as the standard) than the 64 games or shit like Judgment or Curse of Darkness. Either way, the series has seen far worse than Lords of Shadow.
>>
>>344864860
It's solid 8/10, pretty good game. Soundtrack and visual style were great.
>>
>>344864860
Yes
But not enough on the sequel
>>
>>344865135
>Curse of Darkness
You better not be implying that game was bad, anon.

But, on topic, LoS was ok. Not great, not terrible, just a run of the mill action game. It had some interesting ideas with its story, namely the leaders of the brotherhood leaving all their sin on earth when they ascended to heaven, and how Gabriel acquired the abilities of the leaders for himself.
LoS2, on the other hand, was awful, and took steps backwards from what the first game did. Somehow, they managed to make a worse game than the original.
>>
>>344865069
>>344865246
LoS2 is such a strange game. It suffers from so many bizarre design choices. The stealth bits for example. Why? What's up with Victor's awful character design and pointless inclusion? Why is the game's ending so underwhelming?

I heard the game had a lot of development trouble. I believe it.
>>
>>344865456
>You better not be implying that game was bad, anon.
Not bad. Just not any worse or more appropriate for the series than Lords of Shadow. Ditto for Lament.

Sorta okay game. I dropped it around I beat that golem turned enemy. What annoyed me is how hand-holdy the in game message prompts was.

Something like "You can't break this yet!" "Dodge!" "Jump!"

The biggest sin was you can't control the damn camera.
>>
>>344864860
I would've been nicer to it if it called itself something that wasn't Castlevania.
>>
>>344865685
>any worse
*any better
>>
>>344864860
>we
I got this game on a Steam sale some years ago on a whim, and it was pretty good. I dunno why everyone complains about it. I mean, I liked Simon's Quest back when I was a kid, but let's be honest, modern games are just far superior to the old ones, not just in terms of graphics.

The sequel, on the other hand, wasn't as enjoyable. Pretty much all the levels set in the modern age were shit, like literal shit. While the Dracula's Castle was fucking gorgeous.
>>
>>344865818
WAsn't it supposed to be a "spiritual successor" from Castlevania until Kojima said to make it to a Castlevania game?

This is the only game that I'm not afraid of the spiders

I mean they're still unsettling to see but they're doable in this game.
>>
>>344865987
>modern games are just far superior to the old ones, not just in terms of graphics.
Is this bait? Simon's Quest is a mess, but the original, III, and many other old games are excellent and remain highlights.
>>
>>344864860
i really unironically liked this game
>>
>>344865004
Does this game exist because some people compared Devil May Cry to Castlevania? Honestly, I never saw the similarities aside from DMC being in a spooky castle.

>Lords of Shadow 2
What went wrong?
>>
it's a great game. really picks up after the first 5 hours.
>>
>>344866262
There's no mystery about what exactly went wrong, since many people left the studio during the development and shared what they had to say after the game was out.
Basically, the studio director is a humongous faggot who was forcing his own ideas on the game and the team.
>>
>>344866236
it exist because they wanted the god of war and shadow of the colossus, and cinematic shit crowd. even the story telling and twist is like GOW.
>iga PS3360 Castlevania was canned because of this failure.
thanks alot to kojima and his army of tiny dick suckers
>>
>>344864860

I thought it was a solid 7. The beginning is very strong with an amazing presentation but the game is like Alice Madness Returns. Its a long game but the gameplay doesnt get much better to keep you interested all the way through and gets boring near the end. Its one of those games where you have a good variety of moves and powers but you always have this 1 move that destroys everything so there is no reason to use anything.

I never played the sequel but I heard it was worse in every way and that was shocking considering they already had a working formula that just needed to be improved.

Yes - despite some odd design choices and occasional frustrating sections it was still a pretty solid 7/10 game which looked great, sounded great and was rather lengthy to boot.

Everything after it was a crock of shit though.
>>
I really loved this game, no shame.
>>
>>344866262
The dumb stealth sections. What it did right was let you play as Dracula. Why the fuck would DRACULA ever need to hide? stupid
>>
>>344865135

Curse of Darkness was great. Fuck off. It was much better tha Lament.
>>
>>344866690
That's not my point. See >>344865685 (and >>344865893 because I miswrote).
>>
Game was fun, I thought, but it tried to hold my hand way too much.

Making half the shit in the game flash white and bombarding me with onscreen prompts isn't necessary, I know what I'm doing.
>>
>>344866321
Might sound like a joke, but it's not.
The game was (pleasantly) surprisingly long. It really picks up at the first Lord of Shadow fight.
>>
>>344866262

>You want to play as a badasss Dracula and not that sissy anime boy from Aria?
>YEAH!
>Ok here you go. Now hide because all your powers are gone lol

Epic

Stealth Sections
Sewer/Industrial/Factory locations
Characters showing up only to die 5mins later
Stealth Sections
Plot was overly angsty
Traveling between locations was frustrating
Rushed ending that shows a drop in production value and feels very unsatisfying.

Try to make a list of your top ten favorite games. Now, how many NES titles are in it?

0 but I have SNES games in here.

How does that prove anything?
An NES game might not make my list, but that doesn't mean they're somehow shit-tier like you say.
Besdies, I got a few SNES games on my lists. Even some old PC games like a few of Ultima games.

All 3d castlevanias are shit. And Mirror of fate was also fucking shit
>>
I unironically love this game, and have replayed it more than a few times.
The sense of adventure and atmosphere throughout the game has yet to be beat in my opinion, and I never played God of War or Shadow of Colossus so it never seemed like a ripoff. One of my favorite games.
>>
>>344867605

>implying

Castlevania 64 was excellent.
>>
That game is the shits. It has really nothing to do with Castlevania, it has boring cutscenes and is full of voice acting and other frivolous bullshit, it substitutes combat for QTEs, and the combat is bare bones button mashing. Fuck that game, worst Castlevania ever, even worse than Judgement.

Curse of Darkness was fun. It has the best steal mechanic of any video game ever.
>>
>>344867057

This.

That being said though, there were a lot of things about the game I really did enjoy.

The art direction and music being standouts, as well as some individual setpieces like the Toy Maker.
>>
>>344864860
/v/ is too harsh on most things.

It's not that good of a game though. Pretty mediocre overall.
>>
The intro was incredible.

>>
>>344867802
Oh shit, the steal mechanic.
>Death's item can only be stolen after he does he super attack
>you must either perfect guard the attack, or use the devil familiar to burrow underground
>if you don't do either of these, you die
>either way, the window to actually steal the item is less than a second long

An awful castlevania game
>>

The Souls series isn't all that similar to Castlevania.

It cant be a great God of War game because it didnt have enough yelling and anger issues.

I agree. Whether you're a fan of the Classicvanias, the Metroidvanias, or both, the series has seen plenty of good stuff.
