But isn't it that speed is relative? I mean we're zooming in space at a 19 miles per Second, yet we tell ourselves we're not moving, when standing still.

In other words, if the portal comes down at a speed, isn't it the same? Relatively speaking the guy is moving towards the portal (or the portal moves towards the guy, doesn't matter).

So yes, he would have enough momentum to hit the spikes

Then tell me this mister smart guy. How do you go through a door without moving?
>>
>>344855106
Yes. Consider that the man in the diagram is standing on a moving surface (the Earth) and it becomes very obvious that he would fly out of the other side.

And if that doesn't convince you, consider that he'd be crushed if he emerged with no velocity, because he'd be emerging from the portal slower than he was entering it.

>>344855701

Portals cannot work in real life exactly because they break the law of relativity of velocity. If the doorway comes at you with 50km/h then it's the same from the doorway's position as if it stands still and you have the 50 km/h velocity.
And so you have on one hand a doorway like entry that should pass over you unaffected abd on the other that your relative velocity cannot suddenly become 0.

>the portals don't have a perspective

Now tell me what would happen in your world where both portals have their own momentum in opposing directions because of the rotation and speed of the Earth.

Pretty sure that these G-Mod portals weren't added by Valve, but were made by fans. The portals were made specifically for Portal and are not something that just comes with the Source engine.
>>
>>344856183
But that's basically exactly what would happen. All movement is relative (Einstein) so you would be thrown through with the velocity between you and the portal.

>>

There was a video from someone forcing a portal on a moving platform in Portal too. The game just uses the player's velocity under the assumption that you would not have a moving portal. The answer in Portal physics is that the moving platform would just hit the block like the portal isn't there because the block has no velocity and can't go through a portal.

When the portals are not moving relative to each other, there is only one frame of reference. It's impossible for something to move and not have it's separate frame of reference. That's the definition of moving. If you look through that portal, you will see a room moving at you really fast. You won't just magically stop at it's entrance.

You would be flung out of the blue portal at 100 m/s because of the difference between *the platform you're stood on* and the velocity of the second portal.

In OP's example the platform the guy is stood on isn't moving. These two examples aren't the same thing at all mate.

They don't have to answer the question, because it's a fiction that they created.

If they don't want portals to work like that, then they won't work like that.

They're unsolvable because video game engines rely on absolute values whereas reality follows the laws of physics. Relativity suggests that the answer would be A if portals existed in the real world, but most video game engines don't take relativity into account. If you did it in-game, the answer would be B. However, the man wouldn't take damage from the sudden stop, because fall damage isn't calculated realistically either.

Did you not finish Portal 2? All air and pressure are continuously sucked out into space until the portal is closed.
>>
>>344857214
Doesn't the answer entirely depend on the mechanics of the portal itself?
>>
>>344857684
Yes actually, since the moon doesn't have enough gravity to hold the necessary amount of oxygen in order to even out the density of air on each side of the portals, the whole atmosphere will just continue to spill out onto the moon until it's all floating through space.
>>
>>344855135
kek
>>
>>344857856
portals are just doorways placed in 2 positions
>>
>>344857684
No, it would lose an amount until the atmosphere on the moon had enough pressure to counteract the pressure of earths atmosphere

Everyone would still die though
>>
>>344857684

Sure.

Portal 2 shows the suction the portals have. Since the moon cannot hold its atmosphere itwill continually go into space and new one sucked from earth. It#s basically a valve for earth's atmosphere to escape its gravity.
>>

The fucking portal mechanics in the game treat them as doorways.

Throw a ball through a hole. What happens? It flies out the other side

If the ball is floating in mid air and the wall with a hole is moved into it, what happens? Ball stays where it was.

Transfer of momentum is all shifted from the moving platform to the stationary one below. NONE of the momentum will ever reach the guy. Only thing that will happen is gravity will enact on him at a different angle once he's through, causing him to possibly fall off.

The portals are moving at different speeds. Both sides of the hole are moving at the same speed. So the ball/man would need to change its momentum very suddenly to leave the portal with the same "absolute speed" with which it entered.

Portals cannot exist in real life because when moving- which in relation to sth. the always do- they combine two contrary movements, if you have two different moving portals the universe in relation to the one moves different than it does to the other- a universe in which both of them are at the same time!
