By your logic any game with checkpoints / no permadeath are games that you can't lose in.
There's a nice little novelty in being able to catch pokemon and be a gym leader. The game's at its best when you end up finding out about some location you never heard of or when you catch something rare
However playing it for a bit just makes me want to play an actual pokemon game because it strips out basically everything except catching the pokemon. It also doesn't help that there are a bunch of inattentive people walking around that I almost run over when I'm driving

I've been playing since I got invited to the beta test.
Game is literally doing well just because of the name.
Ingress is actually better at pushing what they want with this one so they have room to grow.
Quite a few issues people had in the beta are still present in the release version but they did improve quite a bit.
Lures, Eggs and Incense used to only last 15 minutes. Leveling took forever as in the current level 25 was the beta level 10.
You used to only get ONE candy per pokemon capture and the amount needed to evolve pokemon was higher and varies for certain pokemon.
It's still bare bones game though and people are starting to realize if you live in a shit location or actually want to compete with gyms you need to spend money.

People only pay attention to review scores if it either A) fits their idea of how good the game is or B) it doesn't. So either people praise and use the score as a means of "SEE I WAS RIGHT!" or they blast the reviewer for "SEE, REVIEWERS ARE ALL SHIT AND ARE PAID SHILLS!" or "SEE, REVIEWERS ARE RETARDED AND CAN'T SEE THE MAJESTY OF IT!"

You take a Pokemon game and throw the entire gameplay part out of the window and replace it with a literal real life walking simulator.
You don't fight against pokemon in the wild, its a fucking minigame of "throw the ball in this circle".
There is no PvP.
No trading either.
Gym fights are the only instance of you actual fighting against one pokemon. Exactly one.
Items don't exist, why should they It's not like combat exists.
All you do is collect points to level up your pokemons so they have a better GS. No tactics with attacks or special breeding involved at all.
Evolving is also done with points.
