Is there such a thing as a gaming Pocket PC?

I'm just learning that Pocket PCs had a lot of games on them and I'm curious to find out more. I know that Palm has the Tapwave Zodiac to its name. Is there a parallel for Pocket PCs?

Anyway to stream Steam to a cell phone yet? A cell phone with a controller grip that can stream in your PC would be gold.

I mean shit I played tons of Destiny on my vita hot spotted to my cellphone.

No idea mate, but Sony does it through xperia phones now so there might be a chance.

have you considered doing remote desktop over a VPN? Android remote desktop works well in my experience. Not sure how good it would be for action games but couldn't hurt to try.

Pocket PC archetype is old as shit and not supported anymore so I'm not expecting a 'new' one. Just wondering if there was ever a games-oriented Pocket PC.

As for a modern gaming portable PC, the best I can offer is this chinkshit right here. I have two of them preordered because fuck yeah, pocket computer (especially pocket-sized laptops) are my crack.

this one looks cool

remember when portable computers were hot shit? I miss portable devices with physical keyboards.

it's not really a "pocket PC", but it kind of is, too. it's like a DS that runs Windows 10. you can plug a keyboard into it i guess.

the closest you'd be able to get is probably a nvdia shield portable or the upcomping PGS. The PGS looks pretty meh but runs windows 10 wheras the nvdia shield portable streams games to the system instead.

Because people have asked how such a device fares at emulation, here's some PS2.

Final Fantasy X
http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMTY0MTEzMzY2OA==.html

Goblin Warrior
http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMTYzOTQzNDE2OA==.html

Note that this is using a prototype system and that the final release is now going to use a slightly faster z8700, possibly z8750, but overall it's not good. Still, it is, if nothing else, a promise for the future, should such devices take off, which I certainly hope they do.

remember when apple didn't dominate the smart phone industry and smart phones were more like pcs you could take wherever you go
>>
I've honestly been holding out for a pocket pc for the longest time but there just isn't really one good model. Am I wrong?
>>
>>344839342
Holy shit that's better then I thought. Is that the one that was recently crowdfunded?
>>
>>344839342
I'm fine without PS2 desu, early 2000s PC and VM functionality will be enough for me.

I hope they do continue, but it's questionable as Intel has decided to not make any more of the Atom line.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/3063508/components/intel-is-on-the-verge-of-exiting-the-smartphone-and-tablet-markets-after-cutting-atom-chips.html

Just when things were looking so promising too.

>>344839636
There's some good stuff but it's hard because there's no real push for pocket computers. Even the business/STEM world has rejected them in favor of pairing laptops and smartphones. Seems China is our only hope at this point.

>>344839942
True, price point is a real issue. I'm glad I got in when they were at the backer price.

Blackberry actually still makes keyboard phones, I use the Classic now which is an (okay) remake of the Bold using BB10.

They also have the Priv which runs actual Android and has a slide-out keyboard. I might switch to something like that afterward since I think they're going to kill BB10 for good unfortunately.

It's quite good to be honest. I really like the art style . I recommend you to play the first one before playing this since the save data from banner saga 1 carries on to the next sequel
>>
>>344839640
Yup. Apparently things are going better than they expected to where there's a small chance backer orders could be fullfilled a few weeks ahead of schedule, but people in the comments seem to be pushing for them to use that time to add more RAM and onboard storage instead (currently 4/64, people are requesting 8/128) or else implement better cooling for more consistent CPU/GPU frequencies.

>>344839732
>I'm fine without PS2 desu, early 2000s PC and VM functionality will be enough for me.
I wasn't in for it either, I've just seen people wondering and thought I'd share now that we have some kind of answer. I'm going to slap a 200gb MicroSD and the smallest 120GB+ USB3 thumb drive I can find into mine and load it up with older releases and indie games - which, between Steam and GoG, I've got a shitton like I'm sure most of this board does.

>>344840127
>I'm glad I got in when they were at the backer price.
True, although they actually made it so you can still get the system through IndieGoGo even though the campaign is over, and the preorder price is only $30 more than the backer price was, still way lower than the $500 retail MSRP.
>>
>>344840976
such is the real pain

you know, I'd pay 100 bucks for a dumbphone that had 4G, a full keyboard, and maybe a basic net browser. Or just tethering support for another device.

I dunno mate, what am I supposed to be looking at?

Yeah, I saw that about the price. And thanks for posting the videos. It linked to another one of the thing playing Diablo 3, and I dunno if that's a very demanding game, but it did a good job, way better than I'd expect it to. I hope that means good things for me looking at older PC games.

Were you the one who posted in the last thread I made like this? I remember someone saying they preordered it and were gonna use a 128GB microSD plus one of these bad boys. Probably what I'll be doing myself now that memory is getting so damn cheap.
>>
>>344841309
oh, and personally, I'd rather get more ram/memory and wait longer, as they said they want to make this the best handheld they can, so I'm willing to give it more time if needed.

>>344841367
neat device, reminds me of this USB-C accessory I want to get. It's the Huawei MateDock, and it only seems to sell in the MS store for 90 bucks.
>>
>>344841367
Is there a mini PC like this that can support gaming?
>>
>>344841526
Yeah, that was me. I didn't realize at the time 200gb MSD was a thing. I'm also hoping those tiny thumb drives bump up in size by the time the WIN gets to my doorstep.
>>
>>344841719
likewise, though I'd be willing to stick with 128+128 for a while since I'm slow to fill up space anyway.

It's weird to think about how much data we can shove onto such small things nowadays.

>>344841715
Best we've got right now is the GPD WIN which is what we've been talking about a little in this thread. See device here >>344838024 and see some performance examples here >>344839342
>>
>>344840184
age of empire 3? sheeeit, i didn't know pocket pcs were able to run such graphically intense games.
>>
>>344841526
>one of these bad boys
Would not recommend. They overheat quickly and write/read speeds plummet.
>>
>>344842865
oh yeah? is that an issue with all micro-sized USBs or just the one pictured? Can you suggest an alternative?

I don't know. That SanDisk for sure. Amazon has 128GB Samsung USB 3.0 Flash Drive Fit on sale for $28.99 and has better reviews.
>>
>>344843247
thanks for the heads-up, I'll be sure to check those out when the unit gets closer to shipping.
>>
>>344842865
That's disappointing. At least I know now.
>>
>>344842865
I have a 64gb model, gets warm for sure, but only got really hot the first few times I used it. It pulls quite a large amount of power from the port for whatever reason, so it might drain batteries in UMPCs?

In any case, putting it in a USB2.0 port seems to keep it far cooler, and since with games you'll mostly want good random read speed, that particular limitation should barely have an effect.
