If the entire gaming community decided to actually have standards and not buy into the AAA tricks and lies. That'll never happen though because "gaming" is not a multi-billion dollar industry so its impossible to rally everyone over on idea.

The problem is modern games play it way too safe, for a variety of reasons.
>huge budgets
>huge dev teams
>game making far more complex, time consuming, and expensive
>many game makers today being people that grew up with games and just want to make what they already know, rather than drawing from outside experiences
>jumps in technology offering more and more marginal changes to what is possible to do in a game
Like, what is possible on the PS4 that wasn't possible on the PS3? Slightly better graphics? Who gives a fuck? That's absolutely nothing compared to something like the jump from 4th to 5th gen.
It's got nothing to do with age, and I wasn't 9 either way.

There are still good games that don't need updates or patches. Odin Sphere Leifthrasir is one. It is a remaster, but there was so much done to it that it might as well be considered a remake. Also, for as much shit as the Wii U gets, I haven't had to update or patch a single game I have for it

Games with legitimate difficulty coming from big developers.
I don't mean a game with hardcore mode where enemies do like 0.05 more damage.

Games where right from the start its either get skilled at the game and learn how to play or get your ass handed to you on a diamond platter. Indie devs do this shit all the time with limited resources and they're some of the funnest games I've ever played. SMB, Caves of Qud, Nuclear throne to name a few. Why not make actually fun games with the ass ton of money sony and Micro$oft are sitting on?

Dark Souls. Please, I'm not a troll. Dark Souls isn't the most "hardcore" of games I know you're talking about, but it doesn't treat you like an idiot and it does require you to git gud and accept failure towards success.

And the main reason that I bring up Dark Souls, is because it's starting to have an effect. I've noticed a lot more games taking influence from it, either in combat style or in difficulty, and I think it's a good thing.

Doom clones were a thing. Then C&C clones. Then everybody tried to make a MMORPG. Then Gears of War clones. Then open world. Right now it seems everybody is trying to emulate minecraft with building/crafting useless shit in every game.

Don't know what the next big thing is going to be, right now there are probably multiple devs starting work on a "team based multiplayer FPS" because of TF2 and Overwatch.

What everybody forgets is that you don't need to emulate but innovate.

Local multiplayer is the reason why Nintendo consoles sold so poorly, specifically the N64 and GameCube. When the vast majority of said system's library consists of multiplayer games that give everyone a bite sized experience of the full game, it won't inspire anyone to buy a console or game when they can go to Kevin's house and play his N64.

Hear me out. Many people will agree that sixth gen was the best gen for gaming. It's also no secret that 6th gen games rarely, if ever, had PC versions. Enter 7th gen, and now everyone and their mother started making games for PC. Many people also agree that 7th gen is the worst console generation yet, and I doubt its a coincidence that 7th gen games started coming to PC.

PC killed gaming, thankfully 8th gen looks to be a repetition of 6th gen, and based Japan is staying strong and refuses to make games for the literal non-platform.
