Video Game trends that you actually miss.

and yes, they were better.
nowadays it's "oh another third person cover based shooter... but in space. who gives a fuck?"
back then it was "I can do what? how? how is that even fucking possible? those programmers are fucking magical man!"
>>344809296
You know,
we could go back to this
If the entire gaming community decided to actually have standards and not buy into the AAA tricks and lies. That'll never happen though because "gaming" is not a multi-billion dollar industry so its impossible to rally everyone over on idea.
There will always be casuals. And as long as they keep giving the AAA producers money for shit content, nothing is going to change.
>>344809409
The fuck is this?
>>344808423
No cutscenes or at least "free movement" in cutscenes like in HL2
>>344809845
>we could go back to this
nope
not when video games are now massively consumed.
they could go back if they were a niche crowd. they will remain like all other forms of media.
mainly produced for retards because the vast majority of the consumers are retards. and dew to the inflated cost of producing this overly designed and painted turds, they must target and cater to the above retards.
it's a vicious cycle that you can't escape so long as it's popular. all popular things are destined for the trash heap.
>>344809747
how old are you jesus
also your shit borders on parody.
games haven't lowered in quality. it just there's more of them so you have to go through more shit to find fun ones.
either that or you're getting old and you don't want to admit you don't enjoy them anymore
>>344810194
>>344809747
>>344809845
Fuck off, nostalgiafaggots
>>344810165
>"free movement" in cutscenes like in HL2
is far worse than an actual cut scene.
in a cut scene, I know I can't do anything. so I sit there and watch the pretty movie.
in HL2, I waste my time and energy trying to find a way out of the cut scene.but you can never escape.
it's far worse to give me the impression escape is possible than to simply tell me up front that there is no escape.
>>344810010
You.
>>344809585
What the fuck are you talking about?
The problem is modern games play it way too safe, for a variety of reasons.
>huge budgets
>huge dev teams
>game making far more complex, time consuming, and expensive
>many game makers today being people that grew up with games and just want to make what they already know, rather than drawing from outside experiences
>jumps in technology offering more and more marginal changes to what is possible to do in a game
Like, what is possible on the PS4 that wasn't possible on the PS3? Slightly better graphics? Who gives a fuck? That's absolutely nothing compared to something like the jump from 4th to 5th gen.
It's got nothing to do with age, and I wasn't 9 either way.
>>344810207
old enough to not be a dumb cunt like you, kiddo
There are still good games that don't need updates or patches. Odin Sphere Leifthrasir is one. It is a remaster, but there was so much done to it that it might as well be considered a remake. Also, for as much shit as the Wii U gets, I haven't had to update or patch a single game I have for it
>>344809845
It's way too late for that, man. It's basically the movie industry at this point, and I'm not even talking about games trying to be movies with menial interactions, though that is certainly an issue.
Local multiplayer.Don't get me wrong, I love online multiplayer, but I wish more companies saw the value in local multiplayer besides Nintendo.
>>344810381
Uh, no. It's literally been like that since the early 90's. Everyone just put a new layer of coat on Doom for 5 years. The only shit that changes is what this era's 'Doom' is. It was following the standard cod, regenerating health shooter, the standard open world collectathon with a bland story, but that shit's on the way out too.

Games with legitimate difficulty coming from big developers.
I don't mean a game with hardcore mode where enemies do like 0.05 more damage.
Games where right from the start its either get skilled at the game and learn how to play or get your ass handed to you on a diamond platter. Indie devs do this shit all the time with limited resources and they're some of the funnest games I've ever played. SMB, Caves of Qud, Nuclear throne to name a few. Why not make actually fun games with the ass ton of money sony and Micro$oft are sitting on?
>>344810367
> I waste my time and energy
What? you are playing a game not walking on a park... well, maybe some people dislike it but i still like the HL2's cutscenes. Also the game always try to tell you when a cutscene is done, like some character saying "keep going" or "lets go".

Dark Souls. Please, I'm not a troll. Dark Souls isn't the most "hardcore" of games I know you're talking about, but it doesn't treat you like an idiot and it does require you to git gud and accept failure towards success.
And the main reason that I bring up Dark Souls, is because it's starting to have an effect. I've noticed a lot more games taking influence from it, either in combat style or in difficulty, and I think it's a good thing.
pause screen not bringing a menu perhaps, so you can't pause and look at silly shit in game

It kind of showed publishers that even a difficult game can sell, be popular and become a long-lasting franchise, and that's a good thing.
>>344812976

Doom clones were a thing. Then C&C clones. Then everybody tried to make a MMORPG. Then Gears of War clones. Then open world. Right now it seems everybody is trying to emulate minecraft with building/crafting useless shit in every game.
Don't know what the next big thing is going to be, right now there are probably multiple devs starting work on a "team based multiplayer FPS" because of TF2 and Overwatch.
What everybody forgets is that you don't need to emulate but innovate.
I miss the old Nintendo staple of the Enemy Role Call at the end of games. y'know, like the second, better set of credits. Happens in Super Mario World, Pikmin and Earthbound, to name a few.
some retro-styled indie games nowadays still do it but I always get a kick out of it even though I'm a grown-ass man.

In theory, games cannot boot that fast, especially when the consoles started having their own BIOS to run, letting that start, and then deciding to load the game. The N64 was the last console to not use a BIOS.

>>344810734
Local multiplayer is the reason why Nintendo consoles sold so poorly, specifically the N64 and GameCube. When the vast majority of said system's library consists of multiplayer games that give everyone a bite sized experience of the full game, it won't inspire anyone to buy a console or game when they can go to Kevin's house and play his N64.

Games made only for consoles.
Hear me out. Many people will agree that sixth gen was the best gen for gaming. It's also no secret that 6th gen games rarely, if ever, had PC versions. Enter 7th gen, and now everyone and their mother started making games for PC. Many people also agree that 7th gen is the worst console generation yet, and I doubt its a coincidence that 7th gen games started coming to PC.
PC killed gaming, thankfully 8th gen looks to be a repetition of 6th gen, and based Japan is staying strong and refuses to make games for the literal non-platform.
