The cities were exactly like the rest of the geography; Lifeless and boring up close. There isn't any cool architecture, nothing to explore, and even if there was exploration what would you find? Nothing. Maybe a free ability point to get a generic damage increase you don't need or some gear that isn't Witcher gear so it's irrelevant beyond selling for gold you don't need because there's nothing worth buying.
The dialogue is by far the best I've
experienced since MGS codecs. The characters are fleshed out and are actually given character because they're allowed to speak. They have opinions, they talk about events and it all works so well. Damn Witcher 3 does characters better than a certain HBO fantasy series. The writing in terms of the overall narrative was weak. Ciri, The Masked Elf, Eredin and The Wild Hunt...it just didn't click. The Bloody Baron had more screen time and character than Eredin, and the main plot's exposition is entirely in flashbacks, and not just Ciri's flashbacks, I mean that sequence where random elf boy literally sits you down and says "Let me explain the plot to you" and takes you quite literally down memory lane. Putting your climax in Act IV, and shoehorning Pandora's Box into Act V via random whalewatching NPC who you're forced to talk to because reasons didn't do the plot any favors.
The Atmosphere was pretty weak IMO. For a game that loves to talk about Monsters, Racial Tension, Persecution of Sorcerers, and War, I didn't really get that feeling outside of cutscenes. The overworld seemed ignorant of what the cutscenes were preaching to me.
The combat is the least of TW3's gameplay issues. TW3 has four main gameplay elements:

The demerits of Skyrim and every other game in existence doesn't earn TW3 a gold star by default in my book. Every part of the world, city, mountain, lighthouse, etc... looked better from a distance. Once you got close it scaled awkwardly and was uninteresting.

i still found novigrad to be interesting enough by my standards. architecturally, i loved the differences between the richer and poorer parts of the city. Most notably, in the shithole ghetto, numerous buildings were prolapsing an being held up with wooden beams, puddles of shit and piss, whereas the richer areas had cobbled streets, crisp building and all that shit. the port district has some stylistic similarities with danzig, a polish city
overall I'd say it's pretty clever. Enough side quests to keep you busy for a couple of hours as well.

That's why it's not higher. The reason it's even there is because it has good controls (no console drm restrictions forcing me to use a wiimote or dualshock) it has a good resolution (no handheld screens) and tried to be original, and I give it credit for that. Kirby's controls are terrible, the games have a terrible resolution, and doesn't change it up at all, especially if you don't like Kirby in the first place.

In regards to the rest, the industry just needs to stop cooperating as a whole. If they did, the game publishers would be forced to tolerate the fact that they're not in control of information spread anymore, and you'd have something more along the lines of other review industries.
It used to be the case that journalists were economically reliant on game publishers for ad bucks, which made it a lot tougher for them to be an unbiased party, but LPers have largely taken the place of traditional journalists, and they don't fall into that trap. Furthermore, journalists have spent at least the past decade completely ruining any trust that the consumer might have once had for them, so they're dead as an alternative. There's no reason for it continue other than shortsighted greed on the part of the big LPers.
