Empires just kinda misses it's mark. Once you've had Hitler beat up Cao Cao and a medieval knight there's not really much else fun you can do.
The game is just too sandboxy and random. And the simplicity of the gamemode just makes it fairly pointless. I mean, you will get the same experience playing Vanilla or XL only with added story instead of pointlessly simple and easy gameplay. Might as well just play Conquest.
Like the reason why I still after 500 hours enjoy games like Crusader Kings and Victoria is because it's sort of grounded in reality, and you messing with that reality creates a lot of fun. But since Empires is just so random it doesn't really have that sense of fun, same with Civ for that matter.
Granted it's still just the same game, and the combat is what you are there for, so by god it's still fucking fun as fuck, but compared to vanilla and XL it's sort of boring.

As strange as this may sound, Koei is literally the only ones that can do it right. And even then, there's room for improvement. Even the director of DW said there wasn't much change from 7 to 8. DW9 is supposed to be a gamechanger.

I don't know. As you might have noticed, I think Sengoku Basara is great. I mean, I like the games for different reasons, DW has the battles while SB has the combat and so on.
They don't have to do carbon copies, just keep the overall slaughter thousands of shitty troops part. There is room for them making it their own while keeping it with the same forumla.
