Fairies are strong defensively and offensively against dragon, fighting and dark types.

In terms of concept, lots of the old pink blobs lost their psychic/normal typing to be replaced by Fairy, or simply gained it as a secondary typing. Small, cutesy pokemon are typically fairy types and Pink is the main colour scheme.
The majority of their moves are conceptually linked to the Moon, bright light, and "cute" moves such as Charm that dissuade those that want to hurt them.
Retconning wasn't always consistent (i.e. Granbull looks mean but is a Fairy type, Blissey looks cute but is still plain Normal). They were introduced as an easy way to provide better checks and balances to Dragon/Steel types and make Poison a bit more useful.

My GAME THEORY is that Pokemon are basically aliens that are rapidly replacing normal animals, and filling new niches. They literally didn't exist before and there actually were only around 300 or so Pokemon to be discovered, also explaining the references to regular animals that seemingly don't exist . There are few fossil Pokemon because dinosaurs could actually compete.

They're weak to Steel, but in turn in gen 6 Steel lost two resistances it used to have (Ghost and Dark). Good thing too or Aegislash could have ended up ridiculously strong
