It was years ago so I don't know how they're doing now, but I went to GDC and got to sneak into some of the talks, and one of them was kinda about this.
I think the app was called High School Story or some shit, but the talk was about how they had much higher retention rates than other apps of similar nature at the time.
The way they said they did it was through constantly updating the game with new narratives. Basically, they had a stupidly simple system and all they really needed to do was keep their writers hired to make up new scenarios and whatnot.
Basically, yes, if they keep updating the game every few months with more Pokemon/features, this shit could last them a good year or two honestly.

Walked around my uni which has like 50 poke stops, for 2 hours, all i found were fucking pidgeys, spearows, zubats, weedles and fucking ratatas. Every poke stop was the same, fucking 4 poke balls, not exciting. Worst part is the games network tracking is so fucking ass that if the wifi coverage swaps to another router (same network), the whole game has a fucking heart attack and needs me to stand there for a whole minute looking like a dumb fucking retard trying to reconnect to wifi over and over again.
