Back in the 80s people weren't sure if video games were just a fad or if they'd stick around. There was MUCH less variety and choice. A bunch of shitty games came out and so people lost interest and the few companies that existed went belly up.
Video games back then weren't what they are today. Back then, video games were just one of many things people did. Today, video games are a massive gigantic industry and have become a cultural phenomenon. People don't just play video games on the side, they consider video games to be a part of who they are.
In the 80s the majority of people just stopped giving a shit about video games. Realistically, today, that could never happen. It's too integrated into our daily lives.
