It's mostly server related. Solo i can shit nearly 200 fps but online i'm at 40 fps at best.

There's probably still a community around 2 but ARMA 3 has been getting steady updates, many more recently. It's had many improvements over the years, performancenotbeing one of them. I mean, what other dev lets you play their DLC a month before it releases just because you pre-purchased it?
You will not get over 40fps in multiplayer though. It's impossible, I don't care if your machine has the highest specs from 2025, you will not run this game in multiplayer at a solid 60. Hell, by the time the year this game is set in comes around, you MAY be able to hit 50fps every now and again.

Take it slow. You won't learn everything this game has to offer in a week, but you can still have fun.
If you want to start playing multiplayer, I recommend going through all the VR tutorials first, then building a loadout in the arsenal, save it, then jump into an Invade and Annex server. It's PVE and at peak times you can get on servers with 60 players. Be warned though, your framerate will suffer, even with that setup. In multiplayer set your view distance to 3000 and your object to 1500, that seems to be the sweet spot for me. Remember that loadout you built in the arsenal? You can import it into any gametype/server running an arsenal system, so long as there are no class restrictions.

I was really disappointed with the buildings. Half of them are not enterable.
At least it's miles better than some Arma 2 DLC terrains, which were literally smaller areas directly from Chernarus.

Played ~1k hours of A3 before the Marksmen DLC hit. Then I jumped off. Great game. Nothing else like it on the market.
Unfortunately, A3 doesn't allow for as many players and units as A2 in multiplayer scenarios without taking a huge performance hit.

You should definitely try out co-op mission multiplayer with a group.
There's a lot of fun to be had with playing with other people, and with playing missions where you don't know where to expect enemies

3 has most of 2 content with mods like Community Upgrade Project and others now. Go with 3. I hope you have a group of people that are ready to make good missions and play with you. Otherwise search for one. Public servers are shit.

Won't happen because that will require to change the engine or create a new one optimized for that gameplay
Won't happen because they won't invest millions into creating something as complex from scratch instead of reusing 2001 code and animations knowing that we will all buy it because there is literally no other choice. I just wish for competition. For some investors to have a brilliant idea of stealing the whole arma community by making a better game. Good for their business, good for us.

bought arma 2 and until day z the only decent experience i had was signing up with some terrifying military cult who did ultra hardcore and regimented scrims, with passworded forums to keep out spies and shit.
i can't be arsed to go through all that again, but would want to play some kind of semi formal PVP where people are half organised but you don't have to sign up before or anything.
does arma 3 offer this or is it completely ultra hardcore or bust?
