You catch stuff till you level up. Then you find gyms and try to take them for your team. 3 Teams so that there is a decent amount of rivalry and so that things and split pretty well instead of just one team. Anything that makes pokemon actually fun is not there though, it's just a mobile game with a pokemon coat of paint.
I probably would enjoy it more if the gameplay was actually closer to pokemon. You know turn based battles with 4 moves an all.
Also if it was past gen 1.

They could have made the next 3DS game more like an MMO. But that would be too drastic a change from the formula they already established. And why go to all that effort when the next main series game will still sell 12-15 million copies while simply being a clone of the last gen?
The funny thing is, Pokemon GO was probably created to just be a spin off and purposefully not compete with the main game. But Pokemon fans are so desperate for something different, they are jumping on this game.
