If you die at all in the base tutorial, it's straight to the nexus. The fight up to Phalanx forces you to learn the mechanics. Combat, item management, exploration, etc.

You can literally die to the first enemy you fight in DeS, and not learn anything. Then you're off to the Nexus.
Play through 1-1. It's an extended tutorial. It teaches you how to play the game outside of a bubble. You have to learn about short cuts, branching paths, and how to balance health, and if you're a caster, mana.

Why do people complain so much about Falcon? He's got one health bar, you can just rush him down if you're terrible. The Neo Arcadia levels are all harder, and the Four Guardians are all tougher bosses. Save for maybe Leviathan if you cheese the EX attack, I guess.
