With Pokemon GO being so popular atm, do you still have your saved trading cards from when you were a kid? Whats your rarest card ever, also show some pics of ur collections if you still have em, my rarest card is pic related, too lazy to go take a photo of it.

my friends mom bought me a pack of pokemon cards before i knew what they were, i was just a fan of the game. Charizard my very first pack. His older brother threw a fit, wanted her to take the pack back.
I was the star of recess, kids offered me their whole binders in exchange for it but no. then some asshole kid stole it

But it's available on Android and iPhone too. I'm not a shill, promise.

Well, good news! The official client actually has trading, which is really rare for an online card game these days. You can generate profit and real-life income off ripping off children online.

W-Stamped Pikachu sells for $8~$12 online, actually!
A lot of old cards are relatively worthless. And even the more expensive collectibles aren't that much, either. Pokemon ends up being an extremely cheap card game for both players and collectors.

Is there a cool looking Blaziken or Furret card? I've been out of the TCG for veery long.
>>
>>344739471
Holy fuck, the same happened to me, except it didnt get stolen, my mom just threw my entire complete original mint collection away after i moved out for college.

A month ago she went to the store where most people got their cards and go to play pokemon/magic the gathering and shit and one of the dudes there told her she threw away her pension.

Im not mad or anything, i just wonder how much i would have gotten for it.

Unless you had a LOT of some specifically rare Gen 3 cards, you didn't lose too much. A full shadowless Base Set goes for like $500 tops. Do you remember what you had?

>>344741626
That particular Celebi is 13 years old and part of a special gimmick. Crystal Pokemon like it used multiple energy types.
Nowadays, all Dragon-type Pokemon and some specific gimmick cards use multiple energies. And while a majority of decks only run 1-2 energy types (not counting Double Colorless Energy), you can still make a 3+ energy-type deck work via cards like Rainbow Energy or Double Dragon Energy, both of which provide multiple energy cards.
>>
>>344741515
Is that card telling me that if Blaziken attacks in two turns it does 300 damage?
That seems pretty strong
>>
>>344739864
How to get ptcg on iOS?
>>
>>344741965
Ho-Oh is so fucking based
>>
>>344741965
To elaborate on that, here's an example of a Dragon-type Pokemon for new players. On top of adding Dark, Steel, and Fairy as basic energy types, Dragon Pokemon got added in too around the end of Gen V. Before that, they were all either Colorless type or something random.

There's no basic Dragon energy, so all Dragon-type Pokemon use two other energy types instead, and that particular combination is consistent. For example, all Dragon-type Giratina cards use some combination of Grass, Psychic, and Colorless.

>>344741995
No, it's only for the next turn specifically. So first attack is 100, second is 200, then third is 200 as well.
But even if it worked as you described, it still wouldn't be that good. The competitive meta is a lot different.

What the hell, they kept making Pokemon card past the first gen?

I used to play this thing a lot, it was the only game I could play on my phone. Pretty fucking based, but how come we didn't get any sequels if they continued making cards?
>>

http://www.pokemon.com/us/pokemon-tcg/play-online/download/
Although it's meant for tablets, you can still just install it if you get the files somewhere. Might be hard to play on a small screen, though.

>>344742473
Because around the time HGSS came out, they released an official online client that ties in with the physical packs. You buy a pack, it comes with a code, and you can redeem that online. It makes them a lot of money.

If they released a new game, it would invalidate their client and physical infrastructure. Disappointing, but it's better than nothing.

Also TCGs are a multi-billion dollar industry, and Pokemon is still one of the most popular in the world, sitting at #3 if I remember correctly.
>>
I got given a folder with a load of cards. I have no idea if they're any good or not.
>>
>>344742602
>Paying actual money for cards

So fucking glad I never adopted that "hobby".
>>
>>344742595
Nope. the code from a pack only gives you one pack of that type. And the contents of the digital pack are different from the contents of the physical pack. Codes from tins give out the tin card, though, and some promos like the Generations boxes also give you the cards it comes with, but those are rare.

But the game has trading, so you can get whatever you need pretty easily. No RNG pulling or dusting/crafting or whatever.

>paying money for video games

>paying money for gas for your car
Drop some money on a deck, then go have some fun with friends at your local hobby store every weekend. Or you can meet new people. Maybe even make some money off prizes.
I mean, all this social fun people are having with Pokemon GO is what TCG players have been experiencing for years. Or if you don't want that, just play for free/almost free online.

Do you mean because it adds 2 cards from your deck? That's not too amazing, outside of searching out special energies. People normally include a single Teammates as a tech, if that.

A lot of players coming from other card games are surprised by how much draw and search power Pokemon has. Half the cards have you drawing 5~7 cards every single turn, or searching out practically anything, all at no cost and with no limits.

The Lugia was included in the game when it was sold in stores, but the Mewtwo wasn't, so the seller appeared to have it included just to be nice. The Delta Species and -ex cards are worth $15~$20 each, and the Lv. X cards are $2~$5 each. Gen III cards tend to be on the pricier side as far as Pokemon prices go, mainly because they're hard to get.

They look better in person, since the foil effect and texture makes the picture look nicer and the letters stand out more.

But Full Arts are just fancier versions of normal cards. Here's a regular Giratina EX for comparison. EX Pokemon have a bit going on in the borders, but they're a lot more readable.
The real problem is that most of the EXs and Full Arts are done by 5ban, Ueda, or Yoshinob, and they're not really the best of artists. They have certain style choices that do clutter up the card a bit, like Ueda's ridiculous outlines.

i lost my favorite base set zapdos card when i was a kid. i didn't even know how to play the game so i just gave them away when i got into yugioh.

now however with the 20th anniversary of pokemon i decided it's time to go crazy and spend ludicrous amounts of money on collecting pokemon cards.

starting off with a base set unlimited psa 10 holo zapdos, cost me 100 dollarydoos, but it makes a good centerpiece ornament for my desk. the seller was pretty based and he also gave me a promo elektabuzz.

and after that, i decided to buy a whole box of base set boosters. however none of my friends would lend me money. so i told them to fuck off and took out a $5000 loan to buy the legendary collection box, which costs 3 times as much.

joke's on them. this motherfucker is gonna be worth twice as much in a few years. but imma open it anyway because i'm graduating from uni soon and i wanna have a sick card-opening party.

I played back in the 90s when Pokemania actually existed. I have a complete collection of the first 3 sets, but I never played beyond that. I still enjoy Pokemon, but is the card game any good these days? I've seen they have an online card game now and thought about checking it out. Trying to play the game in real life doesn't seem possible anymore. People only play Magic, and I'm 30 years old so trying to play Pokemon cards in real life seems like a good way to come off really creepy.

The game's a lot more simple than Magic with a lot less player interaction, but that makes it a lot comfier to play. A lot of players who get stressed out playing MtG or YGO competitively normally play Pokemon to relax. That doesn't mean it doesn't have its own type of depth and nuance, though. Being simple isn't a bad thing.

From a competitive point of view, the game's in a pretty interesting position. We're leaving a relatively stale meta now that EXs are dropping off, and we saw a pretty diverse lineup at Nats this year. Lots of different mechanics are in play.

Also, physical Pokemon uses age divisions, so you wouldn't be paired with anyone under 16. You actually see a lot of parents playing when kids are involved, too.
>>
>>344747130
Last month, in the bus a guy comes sitting next to me with 2 massive bags full of Pokemon cards

Its not nead but, generally only played by neckbeards nowadays

As for me, i only collect, though i do know how to play the game
>>
>>344747554
I still play Magic, albeit very casually these days. I also play Hearthstone, which is my go to relax card game. I'm not too concerned with the competitive aspect of the game, and I have no idea wtf EXs are. I enjoy Pokemon and just want to play a card game that's fun and inexpensive.

>>344747559

This is why I'm interested in an online aspect of the game. I haven't researched much about Pokemon Online so I don't know much about it. Is it easy to get into, is the client decent? I have no interest playing with real people. It's difficult to find my age who play the Pokemon TCG, and even moreso to find people who aren't weird as fuck. Even people my age who play Magic are unbearable, which is one of the reasons I have slowed down and only play casually with friends.

>>
>>344747895
I'd say Pokemon's on par in casualness with Hearthstone, but with a lot less RNG and a lot simpler as far as interactions go.

>Is it easy to get into, is the client decent?
If you mean learning the game, absolutely. The client is extremely polished outside of the single player, and even though it's a F2P game, it's extremely consumer-friendly thanks to letting the players trade. Someone who's good at understanding an in-game economy can virtually skip the grind. Or you can dump $20 into the game and never have to spend money or grind again.

If you want to play for 100% free, there's
http://tcgone.net/play.php
But it's pretty dead and very janky. Think cockatrice, but automated and with less polish.
>>
>>344748270

I don't mind spending a bit of money. I've spent a few hundred on Hearthstone I have a job, nothing wrong with spending money on something you enjoy /v/. If I can only spend $20 and get a lot out of the Pokemon TCG then I wouldn't mind that, especially if it's not grindy. Why isn't the online Pokemon TCG more popular? I NEVER see people talking about it, online or offline. You make it sound too good to be true. I also wonder if Pokemon GO is going to bring a resurgence in the card game.

I literally haven't played the card game since 1999. Fossil was the last set I played. I just don't understand how Magic or Hearthstone are so much more popular.
>>
>>344748531
No one knows it exists. Nintendo doesn't advertise it or even mention it, ever. I mean, in this thread alone you have people who didn't even know the card game in general was still being made. And most card game players prefer to play YGO or MTG over it, especially when it comes to the physical game.

And Pokemon in general isn't that popular at all outside of the main games. How many Ranger or Mystery Dungeon or Rumble threads do you see, despite all three of those being pretty great games? The IP survives almost exclusively on nostalgia and the mainline.

Although despite the lack of advertising, Pokemon ends up as a more popular card game than MTG worldwide, which isn't what you'd expect. Not sure where Hearthstone falls on, since most of what I've read was either before it came out or only takes physical games into consideration.

Well, over several dozen high-level tournaments on the State and National levels, we've seen decks like Night March, Trevenent BREAK, Yveltal, Vespiquen/Vileplume, and Greninja BREAK dominating the format, with only a few EX decks like the usual Seismitoad and Manectric sprinkled in. We've even seen some surprising decks like Medicham/Carbink BREAK getting Top 16 at Nats this year.

Can you post your deck?

I got tons of pre-release and 1st edition cards, think my most rare, or atleast sell value, is this normal type Charizard, last time i checked it was around £700+

I stopped collecting ever since they removed those descriptions at the bottom.

I have a 1st ed Celebi and all 3 promo Mewtwo and that one promo Mew that I got by watching the movie with my ex.

They were only gone for half of Gen III and then a few other random sets. The four Platinum sets didn't have them, the E-Reader sets replaced it with a barcode, and the Gym sets replaced it with a portrait of the trainer.

They've been back since Gen IV, though.

= 0, thanks for the heads up

I don't really follow the game but I heard they added break evolutions last year or something, how has that impacted the game?
>>

I have quite a few. Charizard, Dark Persian (some promo edition), Mr. Mime, Zapdos and a few others. I should get my old collection from my parents.

It's a mixed bag. Some of them are defining the meta, but most of them are hilariously unusable.

If you/anyone else doesn't know, BREAK is a re-imagining of the Lv. X mechanic from Gen IV, except now all BREAK Pokemon are solid gold for some ridiculous reason. It really just boils down to giving a Pokemon some extra HP and a new attack or ability, which makes a lot of previously bad Pokemon a lot more usable.

Zoroark sees a lot of play in Yveltal decks (most run a 4-4-2 line now), Greninja Break was a Tier 1 deck for a while since it hard countered early Night March builds (they run Vespiquen now), Trevenant was a Tier 1 deck before the Break and now it's even better, Carbink Break did surprisingly well at Nats, and some of the upcoming Breaks look really promising, especially in next year's format.

does the earlier/non symetrical release of the japanese version cause problems in competitive play?

Very good question. Over the last 20 years, that has not been a problem at all. Pokemon doesn't use a banlist outside of like five specific cards, and the rotation periods are offset to make up for the delay in releases.

However, right now, something weird is happening. Japan got a set called CP4, which reprints practically every card in the four packs that are supposed to rotate this year. Some of these cards, such as Dimension Valley, define how entire types of cards are balanced. Or situations like Crobat rotating out in the West, making Crobat Break unplayable whenever it finally comes over.

The West, however, supposedly isn't going to get CP4, or if we do, it's going to be a messy partial release combined with another pack. This means that for the first time, both metas are going to be radically different unless they decide to bring CP4 over. But if they do, it invalidates the whole point of a rotation since everything rotating out is getting reprinted anyways, meaning we're not sure if we even want it or not.

This is the first real problem we've had.

thanks for the replies. Any idea why they have decided to do this now? Have they given any justification for this?
>>
>>344739268
Yes, they have been sitting in a box since probably 2002, I have multiple charizards. I just looked at some ebay listings and the cards have definitely increased in price since the whole Pokemon Go. I have well over 100 holo's This truly may be the best time to sell.

PCI is an extremely opaque company. The Japanese part, which actually designs the cards, says NOTHING. The Western branch occasionally justifies their decisions, like when they banned a card for the first time in over a decade, but they never talk about the Japanese decisions or actual card design.

So no, there's no explanation.

>EX cards

I never even got that fucking far in the card games. I have shitton of holographics because i got my friend to trade his entire binder of pokemon cards for 3 bionicle toys. His mom came back a few years later to get it back and I said not because we fucked traded.

I still have my whole binder but I doubt they're worth anything. I'll look on ebay every few years and they're all worth like a dollar or some shit.

I'm gonna stop bumping the thread soon.
This really makes up for the infinite GO threads on /vp/ bumping the TCG general off every other hour.

I think I have every card from first set to LG&FR. One guy offered 2500 but declined
